JESUS GLORIFIED-III—John 12:29-31(:20-36)

Attention:

Hershey, our ‘chocolate lab-mixed breed’ dog, has a keen nose for anything unusual that might appear around the house.

I’m always amazed at where his nose leads him, & wonder what exactly he smells.

He will sometimes wander around on his own, but he seems to prefer my going out with him, especially late at night.

We’ll amble around the property perimeter together & he’ll investigate various things, he’ll get bored, & then we’ll come back inside.

But the other night, we were wandering around checking the status of the flower beds my wife has lovingly & diligently planted. Hershey was just ahead of me as I stepped off of the back-edge of the driveway. Right when I did that, Hersheys tail curled around tight enough for the tip to touch his back! His hair stood up on end right behind his neck, & along his back just in front of his tail! He was in full attack mode!

He began literally galloping across the property from one-side-to-the-other, along a line that I couldn’t see(or smell). He had his nose to the ground & in occasionally in the air. I could hear him ‘snuffin’ & ‘huffin’, all while running full speed back-&-forth along the scent trail! He must’ve followed that trail for 20 minutes back-&-forth & all around, until he was so worn out that his tongue was hanging out of his mouth sideways. I never did find out who or what walked across our yard.

Hershey has an amazing ability to pick up & follow a scent trail that is utterly impossible for a person to do! •Hershey’s ‘GLORY’ is his nose.

*Jesus & only Jesus, thru His death, received the penalty of His Father’s judgment upon Himself, so that the sin of anyone who believes can receive forgiveness! And, so that anyone who chooses, to trust Jesus as their Savior & Lord, can have, not only eternal life, but also a full & meaningful life while on earth.

*Jesus’ ‘GLORY’ is His uniquely perfect sacrifice for the sins of mankind!...Freeing believers from hell!

Excerpted from The New Oxford American English Dictionary:

•GLORY(Noun) = ‘High renown or honor won by notable achievements’ OR: ‘Magnificence or great beauty.’

•To GLORIFY(Verb) = ‘To cause the dignity & worth of some person or thing to become manifest & acknowledged.’ OR: ‘To render/esteem/consider as glorious.’

•GLORIOUS(Adjective) = ‘Having a striking beauty or splendor that evokes feelings of delighted admiration.’

Need:

All people are in dire need of knowing the fact, that Jesus life death, resurrection, & ascension are of eternal consequence to them.

The apostle John recorded some of the events surrounding the imminence of Jesus’ glorification.

There are aspects of Jesus’ being glorified that are of great significance.

GOD’s JUDGMENT(:29-31)

Explanation:(:29-31)Official determination

:29—“Therefore the people who stood by & heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.””

:30—“Jesus answered & said, “This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake.”

:31—“Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.”

:29—“Therefore the people who stood by & heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.””

The crowd of “people” “who” were standing near by, only “heard” a noise, rather than a voice or intelligible words. They only “heard” the indistinct sound of “thunder.”

•Rev. 4:2-5—“Immediately I[John] was in the Spirit; & behold, a throne set in heaven, & One sat on the throne. And He who sat there was like a jasper & a sardius stone in appearance; & there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald. Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, & on the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white robes; & they had crowns of gold on their heads. And from the throne proceeded lightnings, thunderings, & voices. Seven lamps of fire were burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.”

Rev. 6:1—“Now I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals; & I heard one of the four living creatures saying with a voice like thunder, “Come & see.””

Rev. 10:1-4—“I saw still another mighty angel coming down from heaven, clothed with a cloud. And a rainbow was on his head, his face was like the sun, & his feet like pillars of fire. He had a little book open in his hand. And he set his right foot on the sea & his left foot on the land,& cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roars. When he cried out, seven thunders uttered their voices. Now when the seven thunders uttered their voices, I was about to write; but I heard a voice from heaven saying to me, “Seal up the things which the seven thunders uttered, & do not write them.”

Rev. 14:2—“And I heard a voice from heaven, like the voice of many waters, & like the voice of loud thunder. And I heard the sound of harpists playing their harps.”

•I imagine that there was no ‘natural storm system’ nearby, so that no one could pass off the ‘sound of “thunder”’ as a ‘natural’ occurrence.

There were “others” in the crowd who claimed that “an angel had spoken” to Jesus. So they also “heard” no distinct words being “spoken.” But they recognized that Jesus was the direct recipient of information from heaven!

:30—“Jesus answered & said, “This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake.”

The “voice” of God from heaven(:28), even though it was misunderstood & misconstrued when it happened, no doubt helped assure the audience, after-the-fact(:16), that “The Cross did not stamp out Jesus as irredeemably cursed & condemned, but proved [instead] to be the locus[source] of His glorification.”—D.A. Carson in ‘The Gospel According To John”

*The ‘message’ heard & understood by Jesus, was obviously shared by Him, with at a minimum, the apostle John! OR maybe John understood it when it was spoken!

•John would then write/record the ‘message’ ‘from the Father.’ Those words are for those who would later read &/or hear the message at the time it was written, as well as for even the far future generations of lost people & Christians such as ourselves!

*Jesus glorification by the Father’s intention, was not a defeat but was an overarching & eternally binding victory!

:28—“Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.””

:31—“Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.”

:31a—“Now is the judgment of this world;...”

Because of Jesus’ faithfulness to His heavenly Father, & due to His being glorified thru His commitment to fulfill His Father’s plan, “this world”(all under Satan’s influence) is “now” rightly & officially “judged” thru God’s perfect righteousness!

Jn. 9:39—“And Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see, & that those who see may be made blind.””

Jn. 15:22-24—“If I had not come & spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. “He who hates Me hates My Father also. If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen & also hated both Me & My Father.”

Jn. 3:16-21—“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, & men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light & does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”

Isa. 9:6-7—“For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government & peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David & over His kingdom, To order it & establish it with judgment & justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.”

:31b—...“now the ruler of this world will be cast out.”

FURTHERMORE:

A direct & intentional consequence of Jesus’ glorification(as the fulfillment of God’s judgment of the world), is that “now the ruler of this world will be cast out”!

The identity of “the ruler of this world”(used 3X in John) is none other than Satan himself, AKA--‘the devil’!

•The devil is also called “the prince of the power of the air” in Eph. 2:2...

•He is further described there, as “the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience.”

•Those descriptions show us the widespread nature of Satan’s subtle/insidious influence among those who do not trust Jesus!

And so because the devil has made & continues to make tremendous inroads into all the world’s societies, he is also ultimately the source of aberrant cultural manifestations the world over, including the ever-changing ‘cultural fray’ in America!.....

**NOW, Just so that we do not give the devil too much credit, we must realize that every person—man, woman, boy & girl—has the freedom to choose to follow either the devil, Satan, the world; OR to instead follow God & His kingdom.

1Jn. 4:4—“He”[God, the Holy Spirit] “who is in you”[God’s people] “is greater than he who is in the world.”

That Satan “will be cast out” is also stated elsewhere in the Scriptures...

**Jesus’ submission to God His Father, sets in motion the ultimate demise of Satan!...

...And that, brothers & sisters is WHY Jesus is glorified, & SHOULD be glorified in YOUR life!!

Satan has been “cast out” of heaven(Rev. 12:7-9, 12-13, 17)—by the completion of Jesus’ glorification.

AND...He is currently bound to earth, where he attempts to undo, mislead, & misinterpret the faith-work of God’s people(Rev. 12:17)...

BUT...

1)During the future 7-year ‘Tribulation’, Satan will be “cast out” of heaven permanently.

2)At the end of the ‘Tribulation’, Satan will be bound & “cast” into “the bottomless pit” for 1000 years—during Jesus’ reign over His millennial kingdom.

3)Then at the end of the millennial reign of Christ, the devil will be permanently “cast” into the eternal “lake of fire & brimstone!

Argumentation:

Heb. 9:27—“...it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment,”

Jn. 5:21-23—“For as the Father raises the dead & gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will. For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son, that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.”

Jn. 5:24–“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My[Jesus’] word & believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, & shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.”

Jn. 16:7-11—“Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, & of righteousness, & of judgment: “of sin, because they do not believe in Me; “of righteousness, because I go to My Father & you see Me no more; “of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.”

Dan. 5:27—The translation of God’s message to Belshazzar the king:—“You have been weighed in the balances, & found wanting;”

•?Who is it that “weighs in the balances”?—God Almighty does!

•?Who is it that determines the ‘weight’ of or decisions? —God Almighty does!

Jude 1:14-15—“Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, & of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”

*So, God’s “judgment of this world” in which we live, is perfectly untainted by sin & perfectly right, & perfectly deserved because of “this world’s” dark choices!

2Cor. 2:14—“Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, & through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved & among those who are perishing. To the one we are the aroma of death leading to death, & to the other the aroma of life leading to life. And who is sufficient for these things?”

Rom. 8:31-39—“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, & furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Illustration:

Any competitive sport has ‘officials.’ They are termed various names like umpires, referees, linesmen, judges, & no doubt many other titles that I’m unaware of.

The ‘officials’’ purpose is to make ‘authoritative’, unquestioned, standing decisions regarding the correct play of the game.

*In the same vein, GOD’s JUDGMENT stands! His JUDGMENT stands eternally, in regard to ALL matters which He Himself has set up from creation!

•God’s judgments, His decisions, are ‘official’ decisions. His judgments/decisions are ‘perfectly’ unbiased, ‘perfectly’ authoritative, ‘perfectly’ standing, & ‘perfectly’ unquestionable decisions!

Application:

?Do YOU trust Jesus’ submission to GOD’s JUDGMENT?

?Are YOU committed to GOD’s JUDGMENT?

?Do YOU trust that Jesus’ glorification necessitates His submission to God?
