Summary: 1 of 1. We are created to experience the life-changing power that is in God’s salvation....So every person’s priority must be to experience that power in their own lives. BUT How can we experience that power? 4 ‘hungers’ that lead us to experience the life-changing power in God’s salvation.

‘TWISTS & TURNS: WHICH WAY DO I GO?’—Psalm 25:4-5

—VBS-2023—

Attention:

The board game, Monopoly. Did you know that there are international Monopoly championships?

There are numerous properties to ‘buy.’ There are 2 Utilities & 4 Railroads. There are 22 properties named after avenues, areas, or housing developments, that are all color coded.

To add insecurity to the game, the number of spaces each player moves, when it’s their turn, is determined by their rolling a pair of dice. And to add further ‘unforeseen circumstances’ to the game play, there are also two sets of cards that can add ‘fortune’ or ‘ruin’ to the player who draws one. Added to that, are various ‘landing spots’ that hinder your play by forcing you to ‘Go To Jail’, or pay ‘Luxury Tax’ &/or ‘Income Tax.’

To win the game, the trick is not to buy properties ‘willy-nilly’, but to eventually own all properties within a color group. Only then can you ‘improve’ your properties with new houses & hotels. When those houses &/or hotels are added, your land is worth much more, & the ‘rent’ charged to the one who lands indiscriminately on that ‘improved’ property increases, & eventually your fellow real estate moguls are put out of business. Monopoly is a ‘cut-throat’ game!

*We live in a ‘cut-throat’ world! The ‘mission’ of the majority of people—the-world-at-large—, is to support themselves by ANY means available. The world’s choice of ‘support’ for themselves is determined by moral values that are completely ‘SUBJECTIVE’—That is, their moral values are based upon each individual’s tastes & feelings at any given time!

*Sadly, the world-at-large is not concerned about doing what is ‘right’ in GOD’s EYES!....But only doing what they THINK is ‘right’ in THEIR OWN EYES!

It’s no wonder then, that our lives are presented with so many ‘Twists & Turns’! ‘TWISTS & TURNS: WHICH WAY DO I GO?’—Psalm 25:4-5

Need:

Life can be confusing. Individuality is a blessing of God, but it can also bring the curse of spiritual Subjectivity. There are so many ‘twists & turns’ in life. There are a multitude of choices that we must make at any given moment.

The way we live & the choices we make, are all tied directly to what we allow & what we seek out, in order to bring about our deliverance/salvation from poor spiritual decisions.

•And all poor spiritual decisions, will bring about poor life decisions!

A very serious question we need to ask ourselves is: With all of life’s ‘Twists & Turns’, ‘Which Way Do I Go?’ OR--?How do I know the way?...

•Jn. 14:3-6—“And if I go & prepare a place for you, I will come again & receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, & the way you know.” Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, & how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, & the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

David is the writer of this Psalm. And he is the ‘warts & all’ model of, ‘a man after God’s own heart’!

God’s chosen King of Israel had a deep desire to experience the power that is ‘in’ God’s salvation...

And so did the apostle Paul...

•Php. 3:8-12—the apostle Paul writes,—Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, & count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ & be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; that I may know Him & the power of His resurrection, & the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.”

We are created to experience the life-changing power that is in God’s salvation....So every person’s priority must be to experience that power in their own lives.

BUT How can we experience the power in God’s salvation?

OR...

Who experiences the power in God’s salvation?

4 ‘hungers’ that lead us to experience the life-changing power in God’s salvation.

1—The power in God’s salvation is YOURS, thru A hunger for...

The PERFECT EXAMPLE(:4-5)

Explanation:(:4)Direction

:4—“Show me Your ways, O LORD; Teach me Your paths.”

:5—“Lead me in Your truth & teach me, For You are the God of my salvation; On You I wait all the day.”

“Show”—edy yaw-dah’—Hiphil(causative) Imperative 2nd Masc. Sing.—1) To know—1a) (Qal)—1a1) To know, 1a1a) To know, learn to know, 1a1b) To perceive, 1a1c) To perceive & see, find out & discern, 1a1d) To discriminate, distinguish, 1a1e) To know by experience, 1a1f) To recognize, admit, acknowledge, confess, 1a1g) To consider, 1a2) To know, be acquainted with, 1a3) To know(a person carnally), 1a4) To know how, be skillful in, 1a5) To have knowledge, be wise; 1f) (Hiphil)--To make known, declare. Strong—To know(properly--To ascertain by seeing); used in a great variety of senses, figuratively, literally, euphemistically & inferentially(including observation, care, recognition; & causatively, instruction, designation, punishment, etc.); a primitive root.

•“Me”—yn—Suffix: Pronominal 1st Common Sing.—

“Teach”((2X)See :5)—dml law-mad’—Piel(intensive/intentional/repeated/extended) Imperative 2nd Masc. Sing.—1) To learn, teach, exercise in—1a) (Qal)--To learn; 1b) (Piel)--To teach. Strong—properly--To goad, i.e. by implication--To teach(the rod being an Oriental incentive); a primitive root.

•“Me”—yn—Suffix: Pronominal 1st Common Sing.—

“Lead”—Krd daw-rak’—Hiphil(causative) Imperative 2nd Person Masculine Sing—1) To tread, bend, lead, march—1a) (Qal)--1a1) To tread, march, march forth, 1a2) To tread on, tread upon, 1a3) To tread(a press), 1a4) To tread(bend) a bow, 1a5) Archer, bow-benders(participle); 1b) (Hiphil)--1b1) To tread, tread down, 1b2) To tread(bend with the foot) a bow, 1b3) To cause to go, lead, march, tread.

•“Me”—yn—Suffix: Pronominal 1st Common Sing.—

“Show”, “Teach” & “Lead” are all in the ‘Imperative’ mood—A command!....AND they are directed at YHWH God!

•How can David be so bold as to do that?!?

•Heb. 4:15-16—“For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy & find grace to help in time of need.”

*Having a desire to be “shown”, “taught”, & “led” means that David absolutely, unequivocally ‘trusted’, the heart of, the abilities of, & the example of, His God YHWH(the eternal ‘I Am’)!

David was teachable!...

?Do YOU have a teachable spirit?

Argumentation:

1Peter 2:20-24—“For what credit is it if, when you are beaten for your faults, you take it patiently? But when you do good & suffer, if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God. For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: “Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth”; who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness--by whose stripes you were healed.

Jn. 13:12-17—“So when He[Jesus] had washed their[disciple’s] feet, taken His garments, & sat down again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher & Lord, & you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord & Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.”

Eph. 5:1-10—“Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us & given Himself for us, an offering & a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. But fornication & all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ & God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not be partakers with them. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, & truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord.”

Php. 3:17—the apostle Paul wrote,—“Brethren, join in following my example, & note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern.”

Ps. 25:8—“Good & upright is the LORD; Therefore He teaches sinners in the way.”

!YHWH God is your ultimate mentor!

Anyone who has ever been an Employer of people, or who has ever worked in ‘Human Resources’, or has worked in management, or has been responsible for training people, knows the difference between a good employee & a lousy employee, & depends upon their having a teachable spirit! Good employees relish the “showing”, “teaching”, & “leading” of seasoned trainers who will ‘show-them-the-ropes’ by example. The PERFECT EXAMPLE

What a different world it be if all people had parents, siblings, grandparents, & other relatives, who were ‘good examples’ for their children! In order to be that good example for our families, we must follow The PERFECT EXAMPLE that God presents for us!

2—The power in God’s salvation is YOURS, thru A hunger for...

The PERFECT DIRECTION(:4-5)

Explanation:(:4) Revelation/Habit/Response

:4—“Show me Your ways, O LORD; Teach me Your paths.”

:5—“Lead me in Your truth & teach me, For You are the God of my salvation; On You I wait all the day.”

•“Your”—K—Suffix: Pronominal 2nd Masc. Sing.—

Strong—A road(as trodden); figuratively--A course of life or mode of action, often adverb.

•“Your”—K—Suffix: Pronominal 2nd Masc. Sing.—

“Truth”—tma eh’-meth—•Noun Common Fem. Sing. Construct—1) Firmness, faithfulness, truth—1a) Sureness, reliability, 1b) Stability, continuance, 1c) Faithfulness, reliableness, 1d) Truth—1d1) As spoken, 1d2) Of testimony & judgment, 1d3) Of divine instruction, 1d4) Truth as a body of ethical or religious knowledge, 1d5) True doctrine. Strong—figuratively--Certainty, truth, trustworthiness; contracted from Nma[To build up or support; to foster as a parent or nurse; Render(or be) firm or faithful, to trust or believe, to be permanent or quiet; morally--To be true or certain]; Stability.

* “Truth” is used here in it’s ‘singular’ form.

Because the reality is, that there is only ONE “truth”!

The “ways” & “paths” are ‘pluralized’ in our verses because His “ways” & “paths” are many, but are settled & belong to Almighty God.

What David wants to be “shown”, “taught”, & “led” in, is YHWH God’s “ways”, “paths”, & “truth.” Those things, & those things alone, will give David the direction he desperately needs!

•Every person stands in need of God’s Direction, whether they are willing to admit it or not!

The “Ways”, “Paths”, & “Truth” of YHWH God are those “ways”, “paths”, & “truth” that characterize, define, & reveal God at the core of His being. And so those “Ways”, “Paths”, & “Truth” are those things from which God NEVER deviates!

•Js. 1:16-17—“Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift & every perfect gift is from above, & comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.”

Rom. 11:33 tells us that the totality of His “ways”, “paths”, & “truth” are past finding out...Yet God reveals exactly what is needed to equip us for ministry(Dt. 29:29).

God’s “ways”, “paths”, & “truth” are perfect in their righteousness, & so, they are perfect their intentions, & so, they are perfect in their intersection with & relation to you & I, & so, they are perfect in their fulfillment.

In order to be “shown”, “taught”, & “led” in God’s “ways”, “paths”, & “truth”, I must be willing & desirous of following His “ways”, “paths”, & “truth” because they are specific to God & His perfections!

*In order to avoid the pitfalls of life’s ‘Twists & Turns’, we must follow God’s Perfect Example, as well as His PERFECT DIRECTION!

Argumentation:

Ps. 25:9, 14—“The humble He guides in justice, And the humble He teaches His way.”....“The secret of the LORD is with those who fear Him, And He will show them His covenant.”

Ps. 31:3-4—“For You are my rock & my fortress; Therefore, for Your name’s sake, Lead me & guide me. Pull me out of the net which they have secretly laid for me, For You are my strength.”

Ps. 119:133—“Direct my steps by Your word, And let no iniquity have dominion over me.”

Prov. 3:6—“In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”

Jer. 10:23—“O LORD, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps.”

2Thess. 3:5—“Now may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God & into the patience of Christ.”

Mat. 7:12-14—“Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law & the Prophets. Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate & broad is the way that leads to destruction, & there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate & difficult is the way which leads to life, & there are few who find it.”

Lk. 13:23-24—“Then one said to Him[Jesus], “Lord, are there few who are saved?” And He said to them, “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter & will not be able.”

?Why are they unable to enter?...Because they do NOT choose The PERFECT DIRECTION of God that is in Christ Jesus!...Because they choose an IM-PERFECT DIRECTION of themselves & the world-at-large!

!YHWH God is your ultimate Guide!

If I was to give the 911 operator a location for our house, I would tell them that it’s at 1687 Salem Road. On the mounting-post of the mailbox, there is a green & white reflective sign with that number on it, that can be easily read in either daylight or darkness. But Google-Maps believes that the parsonage has two locations, one located at 1618 Salem Rd., the same as the church building!, & the other at 1687.

So I would also tell them, just in case something’s off with the number, that we’re located near the northwest corner of Salem & Coxe Road. God’s PERFECT DIRECTION is fail-proof!

3—The power in God’s salvation is YOURS, thru A hunger for...

The PERFECT SALVATION(:5b)

Explanation:(:5b)

:5b—“Lead me in Your truth & teach me, For You are the God of my salvation; On You I wait all the day.”

"For You are the God of my salvation"

“God”—hwhy Yeh-ho-vee’—Noun Proper Deity—1) Jehovah - used primarily in the combination 'Lord Jehovah’[“LORD God”]—1a) equal to hwhy Yeh-ho-vaw', but pointed with the vowels of Myhla el-o-heem’. Strong—A variation of hwhy Yeh-ho-vaw' [used after ynda 'Ad-o-noy', & pronounced by Jews as Myhla el-o-heem’, in order to prevent the repetition of the same sound, since they elsewhere pronounce hwhy Yeh-ho-vaw' as ynda 'Ad-o-noy'].

“My”—y—Suffix: Pronominal 1st Common Sing.—

“Salvation”—evy yeh’-shah, OR--evy yay’-shah—Noun Common Masc. Sing. Construct—1) Deliverance, salvation, rescue, safety, welfare—1a) Safety, welfare, prosperity, 1b) Salvation, 1c) Victory. Strong—Liberty, deliverance, prosperity. Used 36X.?From—evy yaw-shah’—properly--To be open, wide or free, i.e. by implication--To be safe; causatively--To free or succor; a primitive root.

The word, “Salvation”, must be qualified or explained...

•I was ‘spared’or ‘SAVED from’ the effect of ‘poison ivy/oak’ even though I worked in it & around it, to get rid of it.

•I ‘spared’ or ‘SAVED’ a bird from death last week, because, ironically the bird’s head was caught in the feeding-hole of one of our bird feeders.

•You can be ‘SAVED’ from excess taxes, IF you have an upstanding accountant.

•We ‘SAVE’ our plants from drying up & dying, by watering them regularly.

“Salvation” is a term that Christians have at the core of our belief. It is a term that we speak of openly & constantly. It is the basis of all that we are! Our “salvation” flows from Jesus Christ alone!

Christian “salvation” embraces & encompasses our spiritual destiny of eternal life with the God Who loves us. That “salvation” is ours only because of God’s gracious willingness to grant it to us by the means of our personal individual faith in Jesus’ sacrifice for us!

•And so, our “salvation” has positive ramifications for EVERY ASPECT of our life on earth BEFORE we die. Jesus said, “I have come that they might have life, & have it more abundantly”(Jn. 10:10)!

*THEREFORE David seeks to be “shown”, “taught”, & “led” in God’s “ways”, “paths”, & “truth”, simply BECAUSE(“for”) YHWH God is “the God of” David’s “salvation.”

•If you have no assurance/certainty of your “salvation” in Christ Jesus, then you will constantly be ‘working’, by your own flesh-driven ability, to find an ultimate satisfaction...Whether it’s to enter heaven specifically or to answer some non-specific end-of-life conviction!

•?Are you ‘working’ to HONOR God, or are you working to EARN “salvation”?....

•IF you’re working too earn “salvation”, then you’re NOT a Christian.

Argumentation:

Lk. 3:4-6—describing John-the-Baptist’s preparing the way for Jesus the Christ,—“as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying: “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the LORD; Make His paths straight. Every valley shall be filled And every mountain & hill brought low; The crooked places shall be made straight And the rough ways smooth; And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’”

Jn. 3:16-17—“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”

Mat. 10:22—Jesus told His disciples,—“And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.”

Illustration:

At times we have rescued a box-turtle from an uncertain future, that has wandered into the road. You picked up the turtle, & placed it out of harm’s way, on the grassy edge of the road. In doing so, we offered the turtle freedom from being run over in the road. But that isn’t really Salvation is it?!

Unlike the turtle, God takes us off the ‘road to hell’, & does so PERMANENTLY! That is something that cannot be done for a turtle!

The permanence of the salvation that God grants us, requires each of us to be, what Jesus called, ‘BORN-AGAIN’ or ‘born-from-above’!

•Jn. 3:1-8—“There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night & said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered & said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb & be born?” Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water & the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, & that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, & you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from & where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.””

The PERFECT PERSEVERANCE(:5c)

Explanation:(:5c) Intervention/Perseverance

:5c—“Lead me in Your truth & teach me, For You are the God of my salvation; On You I wait all the day.”

"On You I wait all the day.”

“Wait”—hwq kaw-vaw’—Piel(intensive/intentional/repeated/extended) Perfect 1st Common Sing.—1) To wait, look for, hope, expect—1a) (Qal)--Waiting(participle); 1b) (Piel)--1b1) To wait or look eagerly for, 1b2) To lie in wait for, 1b3) To wait for, linger for; 2) To collect, bind together. Strong—To bind together(perhaps by twisting), i.e. Collect; figuratively--To expect; a primitive root. Used 49X.

“All”—lk kol OR--lwk kol—Noun Common Masc. Sing. Construct—1) All, the whole. Strong—properly--The whole; hence--All, any or every(in the singular only, but often in a plural sense).

“Day”—Mwy yowm—Noun Common Masc. Sing. Absolute—1) Day, time, year. Strong—A day(as the warm hours), whether literal(from sunrise to sunset, or from one sunset to the next), or figurative--A space of time defined by an associated term, [often used adverb]; from an unused root meaning--To be hot.?From an unused root— meaning,To be hot.

Argumentation:

Rom. 8:18-25—“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans & labors with birth pangs together until now. Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.”

•1Sam. 13:4-14—If Saul had had God’s Presence in His heart of hearts, he would have never have been compelled to act as priest, but would have waited patiently for Samuel to offer up the sacrifice.

1Cor. 16:13—“Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong.”

Col. 1:9-12—“For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, & to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom & spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work & increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience & longsuffering with joy; giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.”

2Tim. 4:7—“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

Ps. 27:13-14—“I would have lost heart, unless I had believed That I would see the goodness of the LORD In the land of the living. Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD!”

Isa. 40:27-31—“Why do you say, O Jacob, And speak, O Israel: “My way is hidden from the LORD, And my just claim is passed over by my God”? Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the LORD, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint & be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall, But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run & not be weary, They shall walk & not faint.”

Ps. 42:1—To the Chief Musician. A Contemplation of the sons of Korah.—As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God.”

Illustration:

When we go out for the day, we have to consider our dog, Hershey.

He has to be able to ‘do his business’ outside, so we can’t leave him for too long, even though he seems to have a good bladder, etc. We tell him, ‘Hershey has to stay’... & ‘You take care of the bad guys.’ When we do he will go somewhere to lay down & wait for us. No matter when we return, he is glad to see us, even if he’s had ‘to cross his legs’ for a while! He models The PERFECT PERSEVERANCE

Do you trust the God of the Bible so much, that you are willing to wait to do things His way?

•What about your choice of girlfriend or boyfriend?...Your choice of husband or wife?...Your choice of children or no children?...

•Your choice of rent or hone ownership?...
