Summary: Let us study prayer. The boys ask Jesus: LORD TEACH US TO PRAY. Often when all is said and done about prayer, more is said than done.

LORD TEACH US TO PRAY!

WHAT IS REAL PRAYER? Good prayer is conversation and communicating with God.

1 NOTE SOMETHING ABOUT PRAYER. THE DISCIPLLES NEVER SAID TEACH US HOW TO PRAY. THEY SAID LORD TEACH US TO PRAY.

Luke 11:1 And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.

2 GOOD PRAYER SHOULD ALWAYS BEGIN WITH THANKS, PRAISE, ADORATION AND WORSHIP.

Matthew 6:9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

PRAY FOR A SPIRIT OF KINDNESS TO RULE OUR HEARTS.

3 PRAY THAT WE WOULD LOVE GOD AND OUR NEIGHBORS.

Matthew 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

4 WE MUST PRAY FOR DIVINE PROTECTION, DELIVERANCE AND GUIDANCE.

Psalm 59:1 Deliver me from mine enemies, O my God: defend me from them that rise up against me. Psalm 34:19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.

5 PRAY FOR YOUR ENEMIES AND THOSE THAT SPITEFULLY USE YOU.

Matthew 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

6 PRAY THAT WE WILL NOT STEAL WHAT BELONGS TO GOD… NEVER HOLD A GRUDGE. BE QUICK TO FORGIVE.

Romans 12:17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. 18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. 20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. 21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

7 PRAY FOR EACH OTHER…FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

James 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

8 PRAY FOR GOD’S BLESSINGS

Isaiah 44:3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:

9 PRAY FOR UNITY.

Matthew 18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

10 PRAY FOR JOY AND SEASONS OF REFRESHING AND PEACE. THE DEEPER WE GROW IN SPIRITUAL UNDERSTANDING THE MORE IT IS LIKE COOL WATER ON A HOT DAY: WE NEED TO PRAY THAT OUR SPIRIT IS REFRESHED.

Psalm 23:2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Romans 15:32 That I may come unto you with joy by the will of God, and may with you be refreshed. 33 Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.

Acts 3:19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;

11 PRAY BY FAITH FOR WISDOM, STRENGTH AND UNDERSTANDING.

James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. 8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

12 WE NEED TO PRAY FOR THE GOVERNMENTAL LEADERS.

1 Timothy 2:1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;

13 PRAY FOR THE OPEN DOOR OF OPPORTUNITIES TO MINISTER TO OTHERS.

Colossians 4:3 Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds:

14 PRAY FOR THE SICK.

James 5:14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: 15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

15 PRAY FOR HARMONY WITHIN THE CAMP. PRAY FOR OUR SPIRITUAL LEADERS TO BE ACCEPTED BY OTHER CHRISTIANS…

Romans 15:31 That I may be delivered from them that do not believe in Judaea; and that my service which I have for Jerusalem may be accepted of the saints;

16 THERE ARE SOME EASY MISTAKES TO MAKE WHEN WE PRAY. BEWARE OF THESE. YOU WILL NEVER ARISE IN PUBLIC MORE THAN YOUR CLOSET, PRIVATE PRAYER LIFE.

Matthew 6:5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. 7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. 8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

17 JESUS GIVES US A PRAYER EXAMPLE TO FOLLOW.

MATTHEW 6:9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven,(Recognize God as the Holy God, creator) Hallowed be thy name. (Praise, worship, give thanks) 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. (Submission to the will of God) 11 Give us this day our daily bread. (God is the provider) 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. (Forgiveness is the key that opens God’s flow) 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: (We must avoid sin) For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. 14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

CONCLUSION: To aid in our prayer lives it might be a good idea to make a prayer list. It is more than a duty to pray for others, it is your responsibility. What a wonderful privilege it is to pray. We launch our faith in prayer. Prayer will help us to be more compassionate and in tune with God’s plan. When we pray we are giving God the glory due to his name. In prayer we are surrendering to God’s sufficiency. PRAYER WILL DRAW US CLOSER TO GOD. Good prayer will reduce worry and fear. We learn to pray by praying. Practice will improve and release our faith.
