Appropriate Biblical responses To Difficult People I Pet. 3:13-18

I Pet. 3:13-18 - Peter wrote, "But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear."

Paul wrote, Do not be overcome with evil but overcome evil with good. (Rom. 12:21)

Jesus said, In the world you will have tribulations, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. (John 16:33) Jesus said, As the Father has sent me, so send I you. (John 20:21) Paul also wrote, We then, as workers together with Him also plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain. We give no offense in anything that our ministry may not be blamed. But in all things we commend ourselves as servants of God: in much patience, in tribulations, in needs, in distresses, in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, in sleeplessness, in fastings; by purity, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Spirit, by sincere love; by the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armor of righteousness on the right hand and on the left. By honor and dishonor, by evil report and good report; as deceivers, and yet true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying and behold we live; as chastened, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things. (2 Cor. 6:3-10)

Ask the Lord to help you use the following aspects of the sword of the Spirit, the word of God, to take the offensive against difficult peoples behavior, attitudes and perceptions:

* Whiners Do all things without complaining and disputing. That you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world. (Phil. 2:14,15)

* Martyrs After you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, will perfect, establish, strengthen and settle you. (I Pet. 5:10)

* Perfectionists Paul wrote, Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ. (Phil 1:6)

* Arguers Paul wrote, And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient. In humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth. (2 Tim. 2:24,25)

* Dominators (Controllers) Paul wrote, Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out! For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has become His counselor? For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen. (Rom. 11:33-36)

* Apathetics Paul wrote, Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. (Rom 12:9)

* Over-Reactors Paul wrote, Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for the good things in the sight of all men. (Rom. 12:17)

* Legalists Paul wrote, Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle, which all concern things which perish with the using according to the commandments and doctrines of men? These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh. (Col. 2:20-23)

* Spiritualists Paul wrote, Let love be without hypocrisy. (Rom. 12:9)

* Humanists Paul wrote, Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. These things we speak, not in words which mans wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. (I Cor. 2:12,13)

* Traditionalists Mark wrote, For the Pharisees and scribes asked Jesus, Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands? Jesus answered and said, Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men& (Mark 7:5-7)

And beyond all things put on the bond of love which is the bond of perfection. (Col. 3:13,14)

* Low-Self-Image People Paul wrote, I can do everything God asks me to do with the help of Christ who gives me the strength and power. * Sadists Paul wrote, So let no one judge you in food or in drink or regarding a festival or a new moon or Sabbath, which are a shadow of thigns to come, but the substance is of Christ. Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind. And not holding fast to the Head (Christ) from who all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God. (Col. 2:16-19)

* Time Bombs Paul wrote, Bear with one another and forgive one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. (Col. 3:13)

Useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself. Now godliness with contentment is great gain. (I Tim. 6:3-6)

* Intimidators Mark wrote, Pilate answered them saying, Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews? For he knew that the chief priests had handed Christ over because of envy. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. (Gal. 5:19-23)

(Matt. 9:14-16)

* Battering Rams But the Pharisees said, He casts out demons by the ruler of the demons. But He said to them, Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: How he entered the house of God and ate the showbread which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests? (Matt. 12:1-4)

* Competitors Matthew wrote, But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember? When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up? * Slave Drivers Jude wrote, To execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him. * Plotters Jude wrote, But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord jesus Christ. How they told you that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts. These are sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit. * Duck and Divers Hebrews says, Pursue peace& lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. (2 Cor. 12:20,21)

* Clods Matthew wrote, But Jesus called them to Himself and said, You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. * Ridiculers Matthew wrote, Jesus saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, Follow Me. So he arose and followed Him. And when he has found it, lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost! Who can forgive sins but God alone? But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, He answered and said to them, Why are you reasoning in your hearts? Which is easier to say, Your sins are forgiven you or to say, Rise up and walk? But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins He said to the man who was paralyzed, I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house. (Luke 5;23,24)

Now when the Pharisees who had invited him saw this, he spoke to himself saying, This man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner. And Jesus answered and said to him, Simon, I have something to say to you, There was certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denari, and the other fifty. And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more? Simon answered and said, I suppose the one whom he forgave more. * Neglectors Luke wrote, The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank You that I am not like other men extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess. And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying God be merciful to me a sinner! * Inflators & One Upmanship & Know it Alls - Thinkers Paul wrote, For who makes you differ from another? And what do you have that you did not receive? Now if you did indeed receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it? You are already full! You are already rich! You have reigned as kings without us and indeed I could wish you did reign, that we also might reign with you. For I think that God has displayed us, the apostles, last, as men condemned to death; for we have been made a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men. We are fools for Christs sake, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored! To the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and we are poorly clothed, and beaten and homeless. And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless, being persecuted, we endure; Being defamed, we entreat. We have been made as the filth of the world, the scum of all things until now. I do not write these things to shame you, but as my beloved children I warn you. (I Cor. 4:7-14)

I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Therefore, let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you. (Phil. 3:12-14)

* Clock-watchers Matthew wrote of Jesus, But Jesus answered and said to him, Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness. Then He allowed them. Among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others. But God who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us. Even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved) and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. (Eph. 21-6)

* Comma-Counters Jesus said to the Pharisees, Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel. Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! And say, If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. Therefore you are witnesses against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers guilt. Serpents, brood of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell? Therefore, indeed, I send you prophets, wise men, and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city. * Chapter and Versers Jesus said, And whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obliged to perform it. Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift? Therefore, he who swears by the altar, swears by it and by all things on it. And he who swears by the temple, swears by it and by Him who dwells in it. And he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by Him who sits on it. (Matt. 23:17-22)

* Stiff Necks Jesus said, Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law; justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. (Matt. 23:23)

* Silent Screw-Ups Peter wrote, They have forsaken the right way and gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness. But he was rebuked for his iniquity; a dumb donkey speaking with a mans voice restrained the madness of the prophet. For when they speak great swelling words of emptiness, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, the ones who have actually escaped from those who live in error. For while they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage. (2 Pet. 2:15-19)

* Unyielders - Paul wrote, For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to Him be the glory forever. Amen. I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (Rom. 12:1,2)

* Clingers Paul wrote, Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out! For who has known the mind of the Lord? That we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in their craftiness of deceitful scheming. But, speaking the truth in love, let us grow up in all things into Him who is the head Christ. (Eph. 4:13-15)

For it is written: As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me and every tongue shall confess to God. So then each of us shall give account of himself to God. Therefore, let us not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve to do this, not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brothers way. (Rom. 14:10-13)

Holding forth the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain. (Phil. 2:14-16)

* Super-Sensitives - Paul wrote, Therefore, let us pursue the things which make for peace the things by which one may edify another. Do not destroy the worm of God for the sake of food. All things indeed are pure, but it is evil for the man who eats with offense. It is good neither to eat meat or drink wine nor do anything by which your brother stumbles or is offended or is made weak. Do you have faith? Have it to yourself before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. But who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith: for whatever is not from faith is sin. (Rom. 14:19-23)

* Wise-Crackers Paul wrote, We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, leading to edification. * Wet Blankets Paul wrote, Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles! Laud Him, all you peoples& Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Now I myself am confident concerning you, my brethren, that you also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge able also to admonish one another. Nevertheless, brethren, I have written more boldly to you on some points, as reminding you, because of the grace given to me by God. That I might be a minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering of the Gentiles might be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. (Rom. 15:11-16)

* Blame-Shifters Jesus said, Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. And why do you look at the speck in your brothers eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, Let me remove the speck from your eye, and look a plank is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brothers eye. (Matt. 7:1-5)

But above all these things, put on love, which is the bond of perfectin. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever, you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. (Col. 3:12-17)

* Self-Beraters Paul wrote, Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful. But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by a human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. For I know of nothing against myself, yet I am not justified by this; but He who judges me is the Lord. Therefore, judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each ones praise will come from God. (I Cor. 4:1-5)

* Martyrs Jesus said, And which of you, having a servant plowing or tending a sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, Come at once and sit down to eat? But will he not rather say to him, Prepare something for my supper, and gird yourself and serve me till I have eaten and drunk, and afterward you will eat and drink? Does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I think not. So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do. (Luke 17:7-10)
