Luke 24:1-8

by

Dr. Steven G. Cook

I. Introduction

A. Read Text: Lk. 24:1-8

B. Have YOU ever had someone tell you something, but you forgot about it until a particular event occurred in your life?

C. My wife gets after me all of the time because I am so forgetful!

D. As a young boy, My father used to tell me many things, most of which I paid little attention to, until….Something went WRONG! As soon as it did, there was this unnerving ECHO of my father’s voice in my mind REMINDING ME of his earlier warnings!!

E. Our text finds a similar situation that occurred the morning of Christ’s resurrection.

F. Mary Magdalene and other women had come to the tomb of Christ only to find that “He was not there….for He had Risen!”

G. In vs. 6 we find that the angels that appeared to the women exhorted them to “Remember how He spake unto them when He was at Galilee.”

H. In vs. 7 we find the main text of my message this morning:

“And they REMEMBERED HIS WORDS.”

II. The Benefit of Remembrance

A. There are many exhortations in the Word of God to Remember the Words of God.

B. In Josh. 1:13 Joshua said to Israel, “Remember the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you….”

C. In John 15:20 Jesus said to His disciples, “Remember the word that I said unto you….”

D. In 2 Tim. 1:6 Paul wrote to young Timothy, “Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee…”

E. In 2 Peter 1:12-13, Peter wrote, “Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth. Yea, I think it meet (appropriate; beneficial), as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance.”

F. In 2 Peter 3:1 Peter also said, “…beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Savior:”

G. God places VALUE ON REPETITION; Repetition AIDS Learning!

H. Let us Remember the Words of Jesus today - Many of these Words will only be repetitious - But “Let us stir up our pure minds by way of remembrance” as did those who read Peter’s 2nd Epistle.

III. Remember His Words Consecration (Luke 2:49)

A. The very first words recorded of our Lord Jesus Christ are found in Luke’s Gospel record.

B. At the age of 12, Jesus was taken to Jerusalem to observe the Passover feast; however, upon the return caravan trip home they discovered He was not with them.

C. After 3 days of searching, they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.

D. No doubt panic stricken, Mary & Joseph told Him that they had frantically search for Him sorrowing.

E. vs. 49 - “And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? Wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?”

F. What a Lesson for every “Child of God”! Is the Father’s Business important to YOU? Or does the Father get our Left-Overs?

IV. Remember His Words of Revelation (Lk. 4:18-21; Matt. 16:13-18)

A. In this passage, we learn that Jesus went to the synagogue of His hometown, where people knew Him as a child.

B. Read Lk. 4:18-19; 21

C. The people were outraged - they wanted to throw Him off of the cliffs of Nazareth, “But he, passing through the midst of them, went his way.” (vs. 30)

D. He went to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days. “And they were astonished at His doctrine: for HIS WORD was with POWER!” (Lk. 4:31-32)

E. The same is TRUE of the Word of God today! Heb. 4:12 - “For the Word of God is quick (alive) and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

F. Read Matt. 16:13-18 - “Whom do men say….I am?”

G. Revealed by the Father in Heaven - Has the Father revealed this to YOU???

VI. Remember His Words of Separation (Lk. 5:4; 10)

A. Peter, a professional fisherman, and his crew had fished and caught nothing, yet Jesus, a carpenter by trade, entered into Simon’s, and told him to “Thrust out a little from the land”, and then after speaking, “Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.”

B. Peter and his band obeyed, and they caught so great a net - it broke.

C. Peter immediately recognized who Jesus was - vs. 8

D. When a person recognizes WHO Jesus really IS - He recognizes his own sinfulness!!

E. The Lord promised Simon that he would be a “Fisher of Men!” (vs. 10)

F. vs. 11 - “And they forsook ALL, and followed HIM.”

G. Have YOU recognized WHO Jesus IS? Have YOU forsaken ALL and followed HIM??

VII. Remember His Words of Salvation (John 3:3-18)

A. YE MUST BE BORN AGAIN!!

B. Explain WHY

VIII. Remember His Words of Invitation (Matt. 16:24-26)

A. Matt. 16:24-26 - “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me….”

B. Explain “WHOSOEVER” - vs. 25

C. There is NO PROFIT in “Rejecting Christ” - Only condemnation.

IX. Conclusion/Invitation

A. May God Help Stir Up the Minds of Saints to Remembrance!!

B. May God Draw the Lost to Christ!
