Summary: Our refuge, our strength, our Sanctuary is in God alone.

In God Alone

Psalm 62:1- My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. 2 He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.

I. Let’s take a few minutes this morning and let’s look at these two verses.

A. As you know over the past few weeks God has been dealing with us in this area of sanctuary and refuge.

1. God has laid it on my heart so much that we have even proposed to rename the church “The Sanctuary” so as to continue this message of hope.

2. At the sale of the building we will be adopting that name as well as that ministry – of providing Sanctuary and a place of refuge to those that need it.

B. But in the mean time, we have to learn to trust in that refuge ourselves.

1. We cannot take someone to where we have never been ourselves.

a. Offering a refuge to this community without having experienced the refuge of God’s love ourselves is like telling someone how to get around Chicago without having ever been there yourself.

b. So God has been giving us a taste over the past few weeks.

2. A Taste of what is to come and a taste of what he desires it to be now.

II. Background on the text.

A. David wrote this Psalm during the rebellion of his son, Absalom.

1. We find in this Psalm David singing at a very low place in his life, while literally running for his life from his own son.

2. But look at David’s attitude toward such a terrible situation.

B. He is my defense and I shall not be moved.

1. Nothing is going to shake me now.

a. I believe in God and he will now be my hedge, my fence, my strength.
