Summary: Descriptions of Jesus from Scripture

Names and Titles of Jesus (partial list)

I. Introduction:

<>

William Lyons Phelps writes,

“We are all so vain that we love to have our names remembered by those who have met us but once. We exaggerate the talents and virtues of those who can do this and we are ready to repay their powers with lifelong devotion. The ability to associate in the mind names and faces is a tremendous asset to a politician and it will prolong the pastorate of any clergyman.”

A 200-year-old church was being readied for an anniversary celebration when calamity struck: the bell ringer was called out of town.

The priest immediately advertised for another.

When the replacement arrived, the priest took him to the steps leading to the bell tower, some 150 feet above them. Round and round they went, huffing and puffing all the way. Just as they reached the landing, the bell ringer tripped and fell face-first into the biggest bell of all. Bo-o-o-o-ong!

Dazed by the blow, the bell ringer stumbled backward onto the landing. The railing broke loose and he fell to the ground. Miraculously, he was unhurt—only stunned—but the sexton thought it best to call an ambulance.

“Do you know this man’s name?” asked the doctor when he arrived.

“No,” the Priest replied, “but his face sure rings a bell.”

Bible names are significant; they indicate personal characteristics of life Accomplishments – BUT NONE ARE MORE SIGNIFICANT THAN THE NAMES GIVEN TO THE SON OF GOD!. That is why the prophet said,

“His name shal be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, the

Prince of peace.” (Is. 9:6)

LETS LOOK AT SOME OF THE NAMES AND TITLES GIVEN TO JESUS IN THE OLD AND NEW TESTIMENTS:

II. Message:

1) He is our Day-Star (2 Peter 1:19)

2 Peter 1:19 And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

A) The Morning Star (2 Peter 1:19)

Daystar - “which precedes and accompanies the sun-rising. It is found only in 2 Pet. 1:19, where it denotes the manifestation of Christ to the soul, imparting spiritual light and comfort. He is the "bright and morning star" of Rev. 2:28; 22:16. (Comp. Num. 24:17.)”

Jesus is described as this day- Star or morning star which cast light into the blackened soul.

-We once were in the darkness of sin but the morning star has dawned in our hearts.

B) The Sun of righteousness (Mal 4:2)

Malachi 4 :2 But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings. And you will go out and leap like calves released from the stall.

Jesus is called the Sun of riteousness…

-His light opens our eyes so we can see what is right.

-His light brings healing into our lives.

C) The Light of the World (JN 8:12).

John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

“When Christ was born, a star led the Wise Men to His side (Mt2:9) Now He is the Light that leads men to God.”

2) He is our Arbitrator (Job 9:33)

Job 9:33 “If only there were someone to arbitrate between us, to lay his hand upon us both”

-Jesus stands in the the Gap between a Holy God and sinful people.

A) Our Advocate (1Jn 2:1-2).

1 John 2:1-2

1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for[1] the sins of the whole world.

Advocate -- (Gr. parakletos), one who pleads another’s cause, who helps another by defending or comforting him. It is a name given by Christ three times to the Holy Ghost (John 14:16; 15:26; 16:7, where the Greek word is rendered "Comforter," q.v.). It is applied to Christ in 1 John 2:1, where the same Greek word is rendered "Advocate," the rendering which it should have in all the places where it occurs. Tertullus "the orator" (Acts 24:1) was a Roman advocate whom the Jews employed to accuse Paul before Felix.

A Parakletos - in the same way a parasite sucks life out of you… a parkete comes along side of you and pumps life into you.

Jesus not only stands in the gap for us as an arbitrator…. He also is an advocate for us speaking to the Father and pleading our case…

B) Our Reconciliation (Colossians 1:21-22).

Colossians 1:21-22

21 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of[1] your evil behavior. 22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation.

Reconcilation- a change from enmity to friendship. It is mutual, i.e., it is a change wrought in both parties who have been at enmity. (1.) In Col. 1:21, 22, the word there used refers to a change wrought in the personal character of the sinner who ceases to be an enemy to God by wicked works, and yields up to him his full confidence and love. In 2 Cor. 5:20 the apostle beseeches the Corinthians to be "reconciled to God", i.e., to lay aside their enmity.

Jesus stands in the gap for us as an arbitrator…. He is an advocate pleading our case…And He is our reconciliation so we can be brought togeter with God .

3) He is other things too

A) Immanuel – God with us (Is7:14).

Isaiah 7:14

Therefore the Lord himself will give you[1] a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and[2] will call him Immanuel.[3]

B) Judah’s branch (Zechariah 6:12).

Zechariah 6:12

Tell him this is what the LORD Almighty says: `Here is the man whose name is

the Branch, and he will branch out from his place and build the temple of the LORD.

Jesus is the branch of God which extends from the house of Judah to all the peoples of the earth!

*The branch represents humility

*”Branching out from His place” is a prophetic word that the true messiah will be a Jew reaching out to the peoples of the earth not a foreigner reaching into assist the Jewish people.

C) The Gate (Jn10:7).

John 10:11

7 Therefore Jesus said again, "I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep.

The only way to enter the kingdom of God is through the gate of Jesus!

-He is our door way to God and eternal life.

*Also, All true earthly Shepherds (pastor’s, priest, teachers, etc.) must enter through the gate.

-anyone who teaches what is contrary to Jesus’ teaching is a “crook or robber who climbed over the wall.”- and not a shepherd!

False teachers can be identified by their way of entry into the flock. Anyone who denies Jesus is has not entered the kingdom of God:

-false shepherd

-false sheep

D) The Good Shepherd (Jn 10:11)

John 10:11 "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep”.

Jesus was and is our good shepherd…

-The sheep are those who recognize God’s voice and follow His commands

He laid down his life to save everyone who will follow him… All who will accept Him are saved!

Not only is he a good shepherd because He died for us but because He seeks for all who are lost by the drawing power of His Holy Spirit. (left the 99 to look for the 1 who wandered away)

E) The True Vine (Jn 15:1)

John 15:1 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.”

Jesus is the true vine… Once again it is impotant that we realize he connects us to God.

Through the vine flows the life giving sap!

-Without being connected to Jesus we cannot have eternal life with God.

4) Above all, He is our Savior (Mat 1:21)

Matthew 1:21

21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[1] because he will save his people from their sins."

Jesus literally means: -Lord Save or God Save.

A)Our means of salvation (Ac 4:12).

Acts 4:12

12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."

Jesus is the only way of salvation.

B) Our Redeemer (Eph 1:7-8)

Ephesians 1:7-8

7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace 8 that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding.

C) Our Sacrificial Lamb (Jn 1:29)

John 1:29

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

D) Our authority over the enemy

(Luke 10:19, Acts 16:18)

Luke 10:19

19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.

Acts 16:18

18 She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so troubled that he turned around and said to the spirit, "In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!" At that moment the spirit left her.

If we are connected with Jesus … our relationship with Him gives us authority over Satan!

III. Conclusion:

This is just a taste of The characteristics of Jesus described in the Bible. Writers, Poets, Artist, Songwriters, and all Believers who have experienced the wonderful love of God have always tried to express who Jesus is….

-All the names titles and expressions in the world still fall short of describing the matchless character of the man called Jesus.

He possesses the name above all names – which all human words fall short to describe Him!

That is why, when believers begin to discover all Jesus is and does for us, they will rejoice to be counted worthy to suffer for His name (Acts 5:41)

His name is above every name (Philippians 2:9).

Philippians 2:9

9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,

****What an honor that we bear His Name! –CHRISTIAN****

We can never live up to the name of Christ but we should do our best to look like Him!
