Summary: A sermon on the Prayer Jesus taught the Disciples

The Lord’s Prayer

A Pattern for Disciples

Luke 11:1-4

Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him,

"Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples." So He said to them, "When you pray, say: our Father in

heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us day by

day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us

into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one."

Look at another Pattern for Prayer

> Realizing that God wants us to become people of prayer, His house to become a house of Prayer, our homes

to become houses of Prayer

> We must do all that we can to embrace prayer - practice prayer & make it an important & therefore effective

part of our day!

> Joining with believers across the community - Kingdom 2000 strategy - saturated our neighborhoods with

Prayer

Introduction:

> One of His disciples - "unnamed" perhaps unknown to us - we do know there were others who were

followers of Jesus - Peter spoke up after Jesus ascended into heaven - need to replace Judas - there

were others

> My point is ~ Prayer is something everyone can do - some - I don’t speak well

I can’t sing - I am not a teacher - set that aside for a second - we can all pray - the sick the weak the

old the young the busy the shy the outgoing

WE CAN ALL PRAY - WE ALL MUST PRAY If we don’t know how - do what this disciple did

ASK the Lord to teach you

Look at Jesus response to this request: Teach us to pray

our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.

And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one."

First Phrase = Our Father in heaven

Identifies relationship

> Our Father - He is our and we are His - what a beautiful idea

- To me Father is a wonderful word picture - Father God is loving & kind

- To others need to redefine that word - to understand it - always for your good

- What a privilege we have He lets us call him Father

- He considers us His sons

2 Corinthians 6:18 "I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty."

Eph.1:5 he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will

> In heaven - He is set above - already beginning to esteem Him -

- knowing that God is in heaven always, ever seeing, ever knowing ever loving

- saying it reminds us - it acknowledges that He is there

> My father my loving daddy - ABBA Father - above all - knowing all - in place in heaven

- security knowing that daddy’s home - (dad worked afternoons - knew when he came home

Second Phrase = Hallowed be Your name

HALLOW hagiazo ^37^, "to make holy" (from hagios, "holy"), signifies to set apart for God, to sanctify, to make

a person or thing the opposite of koinos, "common"; it is translated "Hallowed," with reference to the name of God

the Father in the Lord’s Prayer, . Same root word as - SANCTIFY

Psalm 34:1-3 I will extol the LORD at all times; his praise will always be on my lips. My soul will boast in the

LORD; let the afflicted hear and rejoice. Glorify the LORD with me; let us exalt his name together.

> We come to God in reverence & humility knowing that He loves us and He is Our Father

> Exalting His name - also serves us well in the process of Prayer

- when we exalt God it places our needs in perspective

- Above all else - my problems, my needs, and my sin - nothing compared to YOU!

> Also a Prayer for the people whom we are praying for - perhaps they are not living in the "fear of the Lord"

- especially in the context of prayer for the lost, or the sick, or those in need - Hallowed be Your name

- God please do what is needed and get Glory for yourself!

Third & fourth Phrases = Your Kingdom come, Your will be done on earth, as it is in Heaven

> We have to think in terms of the Kingdom of God in 2 ways - What He wants now - What is coming

- God’s Kingdom will be established - both in this earth and ultimately in the new heaven & new earth

- God’s Kingdom coming in power will destroy the works of Satan - heal the sick - save the lost -

promote holiness & righteous living and we will see the power of the Holy spirit manifest in

our lives! Here on this earth just as it is in heaven!

> Praying that God’s will is done reveals a willingness on our part to do several things

- Know God’s will - study the Word - "ignorance of the law is not a defense"

- Sunday School -

- Fulfil His will - do everything that we can do to see His will accomplished

- On earth - Today - not something down the road - Today

Next Phrase - Give us today our daily bread

> Principles through out scripture teach us "How to pray for our daily needs"

1. Pray according to God’s will & for His Glory

I John 5:14-15 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he

hears us. And if we know that he hears us-- whatever we ask-- we know that we have what we asked of him.

2. We must put the things of God first in our life

Matthew 6:25 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body,

what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?

Matthew 6:33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

3. We must be content with what we have and serve the Lord faithfully

1 Timothy 6:6-10 But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can

take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall

into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For

the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and

pierced themselves with many griefs.

4. We must be generous to God and others in order to receive from God

2 Corinthians 9:6-7 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously

will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under

compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Sixth Phrase in this model Prayer - Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us

> So hard for us - but it is so clear in scripture - Next week preaching on forgiveness - read this text w/o comment

Matthew 6:14-15 For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if

you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Finally - And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one

> God keep us on the straight and narrow - it is so easy to "fall into temptation"

> We need the Lord to help us - every day - I hate to sin - cry out to God - Help me = Deliver me

Prayer should reveal a dependency on God

> Our Father - perhaps - you need to make God Your Father today

> Hallow the name of the Lord - Praise Him

> Your kingdom - Your will - Your provision - today and every day

> needs daily bread - today is the day - God wants to provide for YOU!

> Lack of Forgiveness - holds so many in bondage

> Join me in asking God for strength to keep going forward - no temptation - only deliverance!
