Sermon Title

As Little Children

By-Evangelist Gary Huckaby D.D

Before we look at our text, I must praise the little children all over the world. You have been born into a world that is full of sin, and unbelief, so do not let yourselves be overcome by them. You have someone who loves you and wants to deliver you from the evils that this world would like to put into your minds. Enjoy being a child if you can. Learn to love Jesus Christ while you are you young. He loves you more than anyone else in the world. Even more than your mother or father, grandmother, or grandfather. How do I know this? The Bible tells me that He loves you more than anyone else. Jesus loves you so much that He was willing to give His own life just for you. He did that so that you could live forever in Heaven with Him after your life is over on this earth. Do you love Jesus? If you want to go to Heaven when you die, you must love Him. He loves you with all of His heart, and you should love Him with all of your heart too.

Let us look now at our text verses about some things that Jesus said about "Little Children."

Matthew 18:1-6;

¶ At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?

Mt 18:2

And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,

Mt 18:3

And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Mt 18:4

Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Mt 18:5

And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.

Mt 18:6

But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

Again in this chapter, verse 10 and 11, we read;

Matthew 18:10; Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.

Mt 18:11

For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.

Children And Jesus

Jesus blesses children who believe in Him. Jesus will help the children who talk to Him in prayer. Jesus will live in your heart if you will ask Him to come in. Jesus will help you in all of your life if you will just let Him. Jesus loves children! The Bible tells us in Matthew 19:13-15;

Mt 19:13

¶ Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them.

Mt 19:14

But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.

Mt 19:15

And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence.

In the verses we have just read, we see little children brought to the dear Lord Jesus, with the request for Him to lay His hands on them. the reason for this act was that it showed the imparting of blessing upon the child. It was the act of a child’s parent to them, when their parent was about to leave for Heaven themselves. If you will read the rest of the book of Matthew you will see that Jesus was about to be crucified and go to Heaven.

In the book of Luke chapter 8 verses 40 through 56, we have the stories of two different people. One is named Jairus, who was the ruler of the synagogue in Galilee. A synagogue was the building where people came to hear the Old Testament read (like a Church building). This man Jairus, fell at the feet of Jesus and asked Him to come to his house to heal his twelve year old daughter. It was his only child. While Jesus was hearing the request of Jairus, a woman came from behind Him, and touched His garment, and was healed from a sickness that she had lived with for twelve years. Immediately, she was healed from the sickness. As this was happening, one of the people from Jairus’s house came to tell them that the daughter had died, and not to trouble the Master anymore. When Jesus heard the news, He answered him saying; "Fear not; believe only; and she shall be made whole." Verse 50.

When Jesus and His disciples arrived at the house. Jesus took Peter, and James, and john, and the father and mother into the house with Him. Everyone was weeping and crying, but Jesus told them not to weep, she is not dead, but sleeps. Then they laughed at Jesus, because they knew that she was dead. Jesus made them all leave, and took the girl by the hand and called her saying; "Maid arise." And the Bible says in verse 55, "that her spirit came again, and she arose straightway, and Jesus commanded to give her meat. The next verse says, that her parents were astonished (surprised). Jesus loves children so much that He was willing to raise a little girl from the dead. There is yet another time when Jesus raised a young man from the dead. In Luke 7:12-15, we see the story.

Luke 7:12-15

Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.

Lu 7:13

And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.

Lu 7:14

And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.

Lu 7:15

And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.

Say, do you believe that Jesus loves children? I do! I know He does, and He also loves you, and me, so much that He gave His life to save us from our sins when he died on the cross of Calvary that day. John 3:16, says, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

Children Can Believe In Jesus

Jesus wants children to believe in Him. He also wants you to be good children. He give us a lot of details about being a good child in the Bible. The way to be good is by keeping His commandments. The Bible tells us about His commandments. In the old testament we can see God giving His commandments to a man named Moses. Moses was the little baby who was put in the bulrushes in the river so that the mean pharaoh would not kill him. He was saved when a princes found him, and he grew up to be one of the great men of God. He was the leader of a whole nation of people, and delivered them from the bondage of Egypt. God gave to Moses a set of ten commandments for the nation of people to go by. Do you know those commandments? We see some of them in the New testament when Jesus is talking to a young man in Mark 13:14-22;

¶ And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them. And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?

And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.

Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth. Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.

Jesus told this rich young ruler who was asking about having everlasting life to keep the commandments of God. This young man said that he had done all of this, but Jesus told him that he lacked one thing, to sell what he had and give it to the poor, and then he would have treasure in heaven, but this young man went away sad, because he did not want to obey the Lord Jesus. Will you give everything to Jesus? He gave everything He had for you and me!

Another thing Jesus wants us to do is to tell other people about Him. He wants you to love Him with all of your heart. He wants you to sing to Him, to follow His example, He wants you to pray, and read your Bible, and to be happy. have faith in Jesus. Mark 10:15, tells us; "Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein." Be an example of believers in thy youth. Remember, Jesus was also once a child. Luke 2:27; "And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law," Love Jesus while you are a child, and you will love Him when you get older.Love Him and serve Him all of your life. Come to Jesus and ask Him to forgive you of your sins (the wrong things that you have done)and to come and live in you. Believe that Jesus died on the cross so that your sins can be forgiven, and believe that He rose from the dead to save you. Confess Him when you pray to Him, tell Him you want to go to heaven when you die. He is listening for you to call on His name.

I was visiting a Church some time ago, and upon my early arrival at this Church. I went into the sanctuary and took a seat on the front pew. As I was sitting there, no one else in the building, suddenly through the front doors came a little girl. I guess she was about seven or eight years old. She came right up to me and said; "Mister, I am glad that you came to our Church tonight. My preacher tells us about God every time we come to Church. I hope you learn about God while you are here. With that she skipped back up the isle and went outside to play with the other children who were arriving. What a powerful sense of God’s presence I felt in my heart as i thought about the message that little girl had given to me, even though she had never met me.

Are you one of God’s children today? If you are not, please ask Jesus to come into your heart and life right now. Pray with me this prayer. Lord Jesus come into my heart and save me.I believe that you died on the cross for me, and that you rose from the dead to save me from my sins. make me your child right now. In Jesus name I ask this. Amen!

Jesus loves the little children,

all the children of the world,

Red, and Yellow, Black and White,

They are precious in His sight.

Jesus Loves the little children of the world.
