"LET THE LORD BUILD YOUR HOUSE"
INTRODUCTION
As he surveyed the damage, Bill could not believe it. It was all ruined, everything. All that he had worked so hard for these many years. Everything was now laying in a huge pile on the ground...
In just one instant -- it was all gone. And as Bill walked around -- shifting through the debris, he began to think to himself.. "it really wasn’t that bad of a storm, sure the winds were high, but look at all the other houses around me, they look as though there never even was a storm. I think -- no I know, I really missed up this time.... I should have listened to the people who warned me not to take short cuts in building my house -- they told me that storms would come -- and that it was better to be prepared. But I didn’t want to hear any of it -- Yeah, I saved a little time and money (seemed like a good idea at the moment) -- but look at me now... I’d do anything to go back and do things right...
And as he was about to leave and go into town, under what was once his little girl’s bedroom wall was her favorite doll, "annie" Bill picked Annie up, and as he clutched that soiled toy -- tears flooded from his eyes.... as he sobbed, "they are all gone, all of them...what am I going to do."
Jesus had been preaching for a while, and the multitudes were in awe at what he had said -- never had they heard someone speak with such power, wisdom and authority. Everything Jesus had said was awesome -- and perhaps some, were wondering how would he conclude such a great message.... How do you bring such teaching to an end.
This is how Jesus concluded his sermon to the multitudes on the mountains on the shore of the Galilee.
LUKE 6:46-49
1994 is now history -- for some it was a good year, for others it was a year that they would rather forget about. For some, it was full of good times and good things -- and for others, it was full of heartache, disappointment and pain. But whatever the year 1994 brought your way, it is over and a new year is now shining forth from the horizon.
You know, there is really not much we can do about 1994 -- we can only hope that we will learn from both it’s failures and it’s successes.
So since I can’t do anything right now to improve your 94’ -- I’d like to instead tell you how to make plans for a better 95’.
Would you like your 95’ to be better than 94’? Could you use a really good year, this time around?
Well, today is the first day of the new year and if you follow the simple advise I will give you -- 1995 will be better -- AND MY ADVISE IS SIMPLY THIS, LET THE LORD BUILD YOUR HOUSE IN 95. The Psalmists writes in Psalm 127:1;
"UNLESS THE LORD BUILDS THE HOUSE, IT’S BUILDERS LABOR IN VAIN..." DO YOU BELIEVE THAT? IT’S TRUE!!
AND TODAY, I WANT TO BRING THIS CONCEPT HOME BY ANSWERING 3 QUESTIONS.
I. THE FIRST QUESTION IS, WHAT IS THE HOUSE THAT WE ARE TO LET THE LORD BUILD?
Well let me say up front that I have good news for those of you/ who like me, have little talent in carpentry or construction. BECAUSE, I am not talking about a house that is made up of wood, cement, nails and mortar.. No, I am talking about a much more important house...
THE HOUSE THAT YOU AND I ARE BUILDING: IS OUR LIFE -- IT’S WHAT WE THINK -- IT’S WHAT WE DO -- IT’S WHAT’S IMPORTANT TO US -- IT’S WHO WE ARE....
AND FOR US TO TRY TO BUILD OUR HOUSE/LIFE WITHOUT GOD AS THE ARCHITECT/AS THE MASTER DESIGNER -- IS TO LABOR IN VAIN.....
FOR US, TO LAY A FOUNDATION OTHER THEN GOD -- IS TO BUILD FOOLISHLY.
FOR US, TO ATTEMPT TO LIVE THIS LIFE WITHOUT GOD AT OUR CENTER -- IS TO SET A COURSE FOR DESTRUCTION & DISAPPOINTMENT.
FOR US, TO ATTEMPT TO BUILD A FAMILY WITHOUT GOD AT THE CORE IN A VERY REAL WAY -- IS A SURE PLAN FOR FAILURE... KIDS WILL GO ASTRAY AND PARENTS WILL SPLIT UP.
YES, FOR US TO PUT OTHER THINGS BEFORE GOD IS A SURE PATH TO HEARTACHE.
THE HOUSE THAT WE ARE TO BUILD IS ONE WHOSE CORE AND FOUNDATION IS A STRONG RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD -- GOD IS TO BE THE CORNERSTONE... IT IS TO BE A SPIRITUAL HOUSE.
And this house that we are to build consists of more than what we are as individuals; it also consists of our contributions to the Kingdom/Church.. Listen to the words of God in I Peter 2:4,5;
"AS YOU COME TO HIM, THE LIVING STONE -- REJECTED BY MEN BUT CHOSEN BY GOD AND PRECIOUS TO HIM -- YOU ALSO, LIKE LIVING STONES ARE BEING BUILT INTO A SPIRITUAL HOUSE TO BE A HOLY PRIESTHOOD, OFFERING SPIRITUAL SACRIFICES ACCEPTABLE TO GOD THROUGH JESUS CHRIST."
DO YOU SEE THE PICTURE PETER IS PAINTING HERE? EACH OF US, EACH CHRISTIAN, IS A STONE -- A STONE THAT IS PART OF ONE GREAT SPIRITUAL HOUSE; WHICH IS CALLED THE CHURCH/THE KINGDOM OF GOD. AND JUST LIKE A STONE IN ANY WALL EACH US, PLAY AN IMPORTANT PART AND EACH OF US HAVE A VITAL ROLE IN THE STRENGTH OF THIS WALL... OKAY, ARE YOU WITH ME/ARE WE ON THE SAME SHEET OF MUSIC? THE HOUSE THAT WE ARE TO BUILD, IS THE HOUSE OF WHO WE ARE, IT IS THE HOUSE OF OUR OWN INDIVIDUAL SPIRITUAL LIFE AND, IT IS ALSO OUR OWN PERSONAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE KINGDOM/CHURCH.....
II. THE NEXT QUESTION IS, WHY SHOULD WE LET THE LORD BUILD OUR HOUSE?
A. BECAUSE LIFE IS FULL OF STORMS....
THE WINDS OF PAIN, SORROW, HEARTACHE, DEATH, DISEASE, AND DISAPPOINTMENT BLOW WITHOUT RESPECT TO PERSONS. AND THEY BLOW OFTEN WITHOUT WARNING AND THEY COME FROM NEARLY EVERY DIRECTION.
AND SINCE WE KNOW THAT THE STORMS WILL COME, IT MAKES SENSE TO BE PREPARED. WE LIVE IN A STATE THAT OFTEN FACES THE THREAT OF HURRICANES. SO AS SOON AS TROPICAL STORM FORMS IN THE ATLANTIC OFF THE COAST OF AFRICA... METEOROLOGISTS ARE ACTIVELY TRACKING AND MONITORING IT’S EVERY MOVEMENT. AND AS IT APPROACHES, PEOPLE MAKE PREPARATIONS FOR IT’S ARRIVAL. SCRAMBLING HERE AND THERE GETTING THE NECESSARY SUPPLIES, SECURING AND TYING THINGS DOWN.
NOW, IF YOU KNEW A HURRICANE WAS COMING YOUR WAY WOULD YOU PREPARE FOR IT? OR WOULD YOU IGNORE THE WARNING?
IF MOST PEOPLE WOULD AND DO, PREPARE FOR A PHYSICAL STORM (EXCEPT NUTS --PARTY BEACH), WHY DO SO MANY NOT PREPARE FOR THE OTHER STORMS OF LIFE.... WHY DO SO MANY THINK: THAT THEY CAN BUILD THEIR LIVES ON SAND/THAT THEY CAN LEAVE GOD ON THE SIDELINES AND STILL BE ABLE TO RIDE OUT THE STORMS? THEY CAN NOT, AND THEY ARE NOT!!!
LIFE IS FULL OF STORMS -- AND THE ULTIMATE STORM IS COMING -- "JUDGMENT" -- AND THE BIBLE SAYS THE WICKED WILL NOT STAND IN THE JUDGMENT. WE BEST BE PREPARED FOR THE STORMS OF ALL STORMS.
B. WHY SHOULD WE LET THE LORD BUILD OUR HOUSE?
BECAUSE JESUS SAID IF WE DO NOT BUILD ON GOD -- THAT WE ARE BUILDING ON SAND/FOOLISH.... JESUS SAID, THAT W/O GOD WE ARE BUILDING A HOUSE WITHOUT A FOUNDATION... AND HE SAID THAT IF THAT IS THE CONDITION OF OUR HOUSE, WHEN THE WINDS COME AND THE WAVES RISE AND STRUCK AGAINST OUR HOUSE -- AND OUR HOUSE WILL COLLAPSE AND IT’S DESTRUCTION WILL BE COMPLETE.
TO BUILD OUR LIVES WITHOUT GOD -- IS TO LABOR IN VAIN; MANY ARE WORKING HARD (REAL HARD), BUT THEIR LABOR IS IN VAIN...
MANY OF OUR MEN SAW FIRST HAND THE DAMAGE OF HURRICANE ANDREW IN SOUTH FLORIDA... IT WAS UNBELIEVABLE IT LOOKED LIKE A WAR ZONE -- HOUSE AFTER HOUSE, STREET AFTER STREET -- LAYING ALMOST IN TOTAL RUBBLE... THE WORST DAMAGE OCCURRING IN TRAILER PARKS, TO BUILDING W/O FOUNDATIONS....
BUT AS DEVASTATING AS THAT SIGHT WAS -- LET ME TELL YOU WHAT IS MORE DEVASTATING -- TO SEE THE RUINED RUBBLE OF PEOPLE’S LIVES AS THEY FALL VICTIM TO LIFE’S STORMS -- CRASHING TO THE GROUND/LYING IN RUBBLE ALL BECAUSE, THEY HAD NO FOUNDATION --
BECAUSE THEY DID NOT REALLY HAVE GOD IN THEIR LIVES....
BECAUSE -- THEY DID NOT WANT HIM IN THEIR LIVES.
AND, WHEN GOD IS NOT THE CENTER OF OUR LIVES -- WHEN WE HAVE PROBLEMS, THEY WILL BEAT US UP -- THE STORMS WILL GET THE BEST OF US -- I’VE/YOU’VE SEEN IT. AND IT IS NOT A PLEASANT SIGHT.
NOW I AM NOT SAYING THAT BUILDING ON GOD PREVENTS STORMS. JESUS DID;T SAY THAT; BUT WHAT JESUS DID SAY WAS THAT WHEN WE BUILD ON THE ROCK/GOD -- WE WILL BE ABLE TO WITHSTAND THE STORMS..
C. AND THERE IS ANOTHER PROBLEM WITH NOT LETTING THE LORD BUILD OUR HOUSE -- AND IT’S A BIG PROBLEM, YOU SEE; TO BUILD WITHOUT GOD, PUTS US AT ODDS WITH GOD --- AND GOD, IS NO LONGER IN OUR CORNER.
IN THE BOOK OF HAGGAI, GOD’S PEOPLE HAD JUST RETURNED FROM A 70 YEAR EXILE IN BABYLON... THEY HAD RETURNED TO JERUSALEM TO REBUILD THEIR LIVES AND TO REBUILD THE TEMPLE OF THEIR GOD. WELL, APPARENTLY (FROM WHAT HAGGAI TELLS US), "THESE PEOPLE" THOUGHT OTHER THINGS IN LIFE WERE MORE IMPORTANT THAN GOD... AND THEY THEREFORE PLACED GOD ON THE BACK BURNER... GOD DID NOT OCCUPY THE CENTER OF THEIR LIVES. GOD WAS NOT THEIR FOUNDATION. THE ISRAELITES, WERE TRYING TO REBUILD THEIR LIVES WITHOUT GOD. AND IT WAS NOT WORKING TO WELL.... IN THE FIRST CHAPTER OF HIS BOOK HAGGAI TELLS US WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM, AND HE TELLS US HOW GOD FELT ABOUT WHAT THEY WERE DOING...
HAGGAI 1:2-11
I see some striking parallels in this passage from Haggai in the lives of people today;
1. PEOPLE TEND TO PUT OFF BUILDING FOR GOD (2)
"THESE PEOPLE SAY THE TIME HAS NOT YET COME FOR THE LORD’S HOUSE TO BE BUILT..."
Apparently the Israelites, though they may have felt that building the Lord’s house was a good idea -- they also felt that it wasn’t something that needed to be done right away... Just as long AS IT IS DONE sometime in the future.
And that is the way many people are today:
THEY THINK IT IS A GOOD IDEA:
-- to get things straight with God
-- to improve their relationship with God
-- to start reading their Bible and having quiet times; -- to be more involved in the work of the church
No, they are not opposed to these things, BUT they are not willing to do them right now.. Because there are some other things that need to be taken care of first..
I have never met a Christian who told me out right that he was opposed to improving his relationship with God... I have never met a Christian who said he didn’t think it was a good idea to read the Bible and pray often. BUT sadly, I haven’t met near enough Christians, who are willing to do the work, and do it now.
The song far too many sing is; When my life settles down, When my job gets going better, When I finally achieve that financial stability -- When I get that big nest egg in the bank (you see I need to build my kingdom and my castle first) -- THEN I’ll really be able to build God’s), or they sing this tune -- When me and the wife work out some things... then I’ll build my relationship with God.. It is always with many, sometime in the future.
Let me say this, if you are not working on your relationship with God right now, chances are that you will not work on it then...
WHY ARE PEOPLE LIKE THIS?
WHY DO SO MANY KEEP PUTTING OFF BUILDING A STRONG RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD?
I think the main reason (besides satan and sin) is that foundation work isn’t easy, it takes time, it is not always fun and it’s results are not always visible at first (YOU SEE, WE HAVE TO TRUST GOD THAT FOUNDATION WORK IS IMPORTANT/WORTH WHILE)......But for many t just seems much more fun to watch TV, build our own castle/careers, go to a movie, spend a day at disney...etc
then it does to build ones foundation with God.
Therefore, many keep putting it off to a later time.
2. THE SECOND PARALLEL I SEE -- IS THAT WITHOUT GOD AS A FOUNDATION LIFE IS NEVER QUIT SATISFYING ENOUGH
Listen to these verses again, they really paint a vivid picture of a dissatisfied life....
HAGGAI 1:5-7,9A
The Israelites were not very satisfied with their lives, nothing seemed to work out, they always keep falling short of satisfaction...
The things they did and tried, were never quit enough to give them true and complete satisfaction.... So God tells these people; "GIVE CAREFUL THOUGHT TO YOUR WAYS..." You see God wanted them to think about what was going on, He wanted them to understand that the reason life was not satisfying to them -- was because they had put God on the back burner... Because they were living for the moment, for pleasure, for themselves --
And they were not living for their God.
What God is saying is, "think about it -- you are trying all kinds of things to make your life satisfying, but you are still miserable/still unhappy/still discontented -- And God continues, Now, do think the reason your life is not satisfying, could possibly be -- because you have left me out of it..."
We also, need to GIVE CAREFUL THOUGHT TO OUR WAYS

Is your life satisfying right now? are you full hope and joy? Are you happy with the way things are going? Or have you found yourself trying all kinds of things in vain attempts to achieve satisfaction: money, a big home, nice clothes, pleasure, drink, a new relationship, a new job, a new car...etc BUT you keep coming up empty..
"YOU, HAVE HARVESTED LITTLE," "YOU, NEVER HAVE ENOUGH"
"YOU, NEVER HAVE YOUR FILL," "YOU, ARE NEVER WARM,"
"YOUR, PURSE HAS HOLES IN IT,"
"YOU, EXPECTED MUCH, BUT IT KEEPS TURNING OUT TO BE LITTLE." If you are not content, if you are not satisfied with your life.... And many are not -- God is telling you RIGHT NOW "give careful thought to your ways...!" And you will see that the reason you are not finding satisfaction, is because you have left me out!!"
Some of you have placed God on the back burner... You have tried everything else and it’s not working. DON’T SPEND 1995’ GOING DOWN THE SAME EMPTY ROAD.
Why not try God? And in so doing become like Paul who learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. Who could endure all things (be content in any situation) though Christ who gave him strength..
The Son of God came to give life and give it to the full -- And if you are only content with your life when things are running smooth and perfect -- you need to do some foundation work. You need to work on your relationship with God.
BROTHERS AND SISTERS, AS YOU BEGIN 1995, "GIVE CAREFUL THOUGHT TO YOUR WAYS."
ANOTHER TRUTH WE SEE IN THIS PASSAGE FROM HAGGAI IS:
3. GOD IS NOT PLEASED WHEN WE LIVE THIS WAY/he is not pleased WHEN WE ARE NOT BUILDING IN HIM
"THEN THE WORD OF THE LORD CAME THROUGH THE PROPHET HAGGAI: `IS IT A TIME FOR YOU YOURSELVES TO BE LIVING IN YOUR PANELED HOUSE, WHILE THIS HOUSE REMAINS A RUIN?"
GOD SAW WHAT THEY WERE DOING AND HE WAS NOT PLEASED. The Israelites had time for themselves, they had time to build what they wanted to build, they had time AND MONEY for their own comfort -- but they had no time for God....
These people took care of themselves first... They kept the first fruits of their labors for themselves. And what they did was not hidden from God.
AND AS GOD SAW THEM, HE SEES WHAT MANY people are doing today and he is not pleased, many have great material possessions and are involved in all kinds of activity, BUT they have no time for God...
AND Their spiritual lives and their relationship to God lays in ruins -- while they live in paneled houses...
And let me say this as well, many times churches lay in ruins physically and spiritually, because her attendee’s have time for themselves/for their house, but have little or no time for God....
Hear me, God is the same yesterday, today and forever and He is not pleased when "His People" put Him and the Church His Son died for -- at the bottom of their lists...
4. AND, THE 4TH PARALLEL WE SEE FROM THIS PASSAGE IN HAGGAI IS THAT, GOD ACTIVELY OPPOSES US WHEN WE LIVE THIS WAY (WHEN WE BUILD FOR OURSELVES AND NOT FOR HIM)
LISTEN TO THE WORD OF GOD AGAIN;
"YOU EXPECTED MUCH, BUT SEE, IT TURNED OUT TO BE LITTLE. WHAT YOU BROUGHT HOME, I BLEW AWAY. WHY? DECLARES THE LORD ALMIGHTY. BECAUSE OF MY HOUSE, WHICH REMAINS A RUIN, WHILE EACH OF YOU IS BUSY WITH HIS OWN HOUSE..."
BECAUSE THEY WERE NEGLECTING HIM -- GOD CAUSED ALL THEIR LABOR TO BE IN VAIN.... THEY EXPECTED MUCH FROM THEIR EARTHLY PURSUITS -- BUT IT TURNED OUT TO BE LITTLE --
WHY, BECAUSE GOD BLEW AWAY WHAT THEY BROUGHT HOME... YOU SEE, GOD ACTIVELY OPPOSES HIS PEOPLE WHEN THEY LIVE THIS WAY...
LISTEN TO VERSES 10,11:
GOD WILL DISCIPLINE HIS PEOPLE, LISTEN TO THIS NEW TESTAMENT PASSAGE, HEBREWS 12:5b-11;
AND WHY DOES GOD ACTIVELY OPPOSE HIS PEOPLE AT THESE TIMES? WELL, WHY DID HE OPPOSE THE ISRAELITES IN HAGGAI’S TIME; TO GET THEM TO RETURN TO HIM --
SO THAT HE COULD ONCE AGAIN BLESS THEM --
SO THAT HE COULD ONCE AGAIN BE ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN HELPING THEM.... LISTEN TO:
1:12,13, 2:6-9
WHEN WE PUT GOD FIRST NOT ONLY DOES HE NOT BLOW AWAY, WHAT WE BRING HOME BUT HE ALSO PREVENTS MANY BAD THINGS FROM HAPPENING TO US (SOME NOT ALL)...
MALACHI 3:8-11
BROS AND SISTERS, GOD OUR HEAVENLY WOULD MUCH RATHER HELP AND BLESS HIS CHILDREN -- THAN HINDER AND PUNISH THEM -- BUT WE MUST UNDERSTAND THAT THE CHOICE IS OURS.... WE NEED TO LIVE A LIFE THAT ALLOWS GOD TO BLESS US -- TO BLESS US TO THE MAX!
IF YOU WANT A GREAT 1995, YOU NEED TO LET THE LORD BUILD YOU HOUSE --- GOD MUST BE THE FOUNDATION AND THE CENTER OF YOUR LIFE...
YOU MUST, BUILD YOUR HOUSE ON THE ROCK AND NOT ON SAND, BECAUSE THIS LIFE IS FULL OF STORMS.... THE WINDS WILL BLOW THE WAVES WILL RISE -- AND ALL HOUSES BUILT ON SAND WILL FALL...
BUT THE HOUSES BUILT ON THE ROCK, WILL WEATHER LIVES STORMS.
BUT THOUGH ALL THIS IS TRUE
PEOPLE STILL TEND TO PUT OFF BUILDING A FOUNDATION IN GOD... WHY ARE YOU PUTTING IT OFF? WHAT HAVE YOU DECIDE IS MORE IMPORTANT?
WHEN GOD, IS NOT AT THE CENTER OF YOUR LIFE, LIFE WILL NEVER BE QUITE SATISFYING ENOUGH.... IS YOUR LIFE SATISFYING?
THEN GIVE CAREFUL THOUGHT TO YOUR WAYS!
IF YOU HAVE BEEN PERSUADED TODAY THAT YOU NEED TO LET THE LORD BUILD YOUR HOUSE IN 1995.
THEN YOU NEED TO LISTEN AS WE ANSWER OUR LAST QUESTION
III. HOW DO WE LET THE LORD BUILD OUR HOUSE?
HOW DO WE ENSURE THAT WE ARE IN FACT BUILDING ON THE ROCK?
HOW DO WE BUILD A HOUSE THAT WILL SUCCESSFULLY WEATHER THE STORMS OF THIS LIFE?
AND, EVEN IF YOU THINK YOU ARE BUILDING ON THE ROCK -- YOU NEED TO LISTEN BECAUSE JESUS SAYS THAT SOME WHO THINK THAT THEY ARE BUILDING ON THE ROCK -- IN REALITY HAVE BUILD THEIR HOUSE without A FOUNDATION. LISTEN TO HIS WORDS FROM
LUKE 6:46-49 AGAIN,
JESUS SAID THAT MANY WILL CALL HIM LORD, AND WILL THINK THEY HAVE BUILT ON THE ROCK -- BUT HAVE IN REALITY BUILD ON SAND...
HOW DO WE KNOW IF WE ARE BUILDING ON THE ROCK;
JESUS THE ONE WHO HAS ALL AUTHORITY, IN HEAVEN AND IN EARTH SAYS, THIS HOW WE KNOW::::
IF WE DO WHAT HE SAYS, IF WE HEAR HIS WORDS AND PUT THEM INTO PRACTICE WE ARE, BUILDING ON THE ROCK.....
THIS IS JESUS’ CRITERIA...
THEREFORE WOULD JESUS SAY THAT WE ARE BUILDING
WITH A FOUNDATION OR WITHOUT A FOUNDATION IF:
WE NEVER READ HIS WORD OR PRAY
WE DO NOT GIVE HIM OUR TITHE
WE DO NOT ATTEND HIS CHURCH FAITHFULLY (THERE IS NO EXCUSE ACCEPTABLE TO GOD FOR FOR FORSAKING THE GATHERING TOGETHER OF THE SAINTS).
WE DO NOT WORK IN HIS CHURCH
WE DO NOT SHARE HIS GOSPEL OF REDEMPTION WITH THE LOST
WE DO NOT LOVE ONE ANOTHER DEEPLY FROM THE HEART
WE DO NOT, DO TO OTHERS AS WE WOULD HAVE OTHERS DO TO US....
IF YOU’D LIKE SOMEONE:
TO GREET YOU WARMLY, GREET THEM WARMLY --
HAVE YOU OVER FOR A MEAL, HAVE THEM OVER --
GIVE YOU A WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT, GIVE THEM A WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT
