2 THE RUNNING

Thoughts: attitude is everything. Press on (Phil 3). Throw off the hindrances (laziness, lack of training & discipline 1 Cor 9, people Gal 5:7 (parents- don’t hinder children! Eph 6:4), sin Heb 12, see value of godliness 1 Tim 4:7&8, ), heb 12: persevere, stick to the track, eyes on Jesus, endure opposition, don’t lose heart, struggle against sin

Intro to section –David

How you run is everything. There are things ‘in us’ and ‘things out there’ that will try and stop us running a good race. We’ll look at the helps and hindrances to running the race after we sing:

N- Songpro- Wake Up My Soul - David

10.37

N- PPT 3 Mini- talk 2- Ewen (title appears automatically)

PPT3.2 There are lots of things that can affect your running (and spelling!)

- PPT3.3 “crossword challenge time” to see what they are. Adults 1 team, children another!

o David will read out a passage of the Bible and you have to find the word up there of the thing that can ‘hinder or help’ your race! An exact word that has been read out is iup there (unless I tell otherwise).

o If the team gets it right it’s 2 points. If they get it right after clue it’s 1 point. If not it then goes to the other team for 1 point

Children: TRAINING

David Read- 1CO 9:24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. 27 No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

Wait until the word TRAINING is discovered and then PPT3.4

Adults: LAZINESS

What other word, implied by this passage, can be a hindrance to our race, as well

- clue (“I can’t be bothered to run for Jesus! It’s effort!”. Begins with “L”)

Wait until the word LAZINESS is discovered and then PPT3.5

Children: DISCIPLINE

What other word, implied by this passage by the way a good Christian ‘trains himself’ can be a real help to our race.

- clue (the disciples were called this because they had it. Begins with “D”)

Wait until the word DISCIPLINE is discovered and then PPT3.6

Adults: PEOPLE

What hindered the running of their race in this passage? The exact word isn’t in this passage… but the answer is up there

David Read GAL 5:7 You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth? 8 That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you.

- clue: (WHO cut in on you)

Wait until the word PEOPLE is discovered and then PPT3.7

Yes- people can hinder our race. Sometimes we need to be careful who we hag around with as they can be a bad influence

- but also, some are a hindrance without ever meaning, consciously, to be. For example: parents with their children when the kids are keen on God

o “take them before it’s too late!

Children: GODLINESS

David read: 1 Tim 4:7 Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. 8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come

- clue- read passage again. This has value for all things

Wait until the word GODLINESS is discovered and then PPT3.8

Adults: SIN

David Read HEB 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles,

- clue: no clue for this one as you’re adults and it’s obvious!

Wait until the word SIN is discovered and then PPT3.9

Children: PERSEVERE

- the next words come in the order in the passage- so pay careful attention! There are 4 more from 1 passage.

David Read: and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us

Wait until the word PERSEVERE is discovered and then PPT3.10

Adults: EYES.

David read: Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God

- clue: Open open your eyes, for goodness sake. Look hard and you’ll see it!

Wait until the word EYES is discovered and then PPT3.11

Children: WEARY

Now 2 words in the next passage. You kids have to get the first one that can hinder our race

David read: Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

- clue. Maybe you’re too tired to find it?

-

Wait until the word WEARY is discovered and then PPT3.12

Adults: HEART

What’s the 2nd word up there that can hinder our race

Wait until the word HEART is discovered and then PPT3.13

Yes- guard your heart

Children: PRESS ON

And now, children- the last word up there

David Read: PHP 3:12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

PHP 3:15 All of us who are mature should take such a view of things

Wait until the word PRESS ON is discovered and then PPT3.14

Total scores?

Listen to what paul says about running the race:

HEB 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders

We must throw off…get rid of the hindrances s to our race. We must go for the things that help our race.

- Don’t let ANYTHING hinder your race. Just like Eric Lidell.

- Even if you fall- don’t GET OUT of the race- GET BACK UP and GET BACK IN THERE

PPT3.15 Play video clip when lidell falls and gets up

10.45

N- Songpro We’ve got a lot of hope, a little faith - David

N-PPT4- 3THE REWARD (title comes in when you press N)

Thoughts: the winning. Just finishing is winning! 1 Cor 9:25- a CROWN, 2 tim 4:7 – a PRIZE. You must complete the race (it’s not how you start that counts, it’s how you finish- but finish you must!)

Race: David-

PPT4.2 (press return when race starts for the chariots of fire music. Music will continue looping until you press return to stop it)

Ping-pong balls and straws race? All race ‘round building (to chariots of fire music)- but get same prize at end. (Ewen will apply what’s happened)

10.52

Mini-talk 3 –Ewen

- PPT4.3 What is winning?

• PPT4.4 it’s not being better than everyone else!

• PPT4.5It’s not even getting gold!

• PPT4.6 FINISHING is WINNING!

• PPT4.7All the same prize!

• PPT4.8but you must finish!

PPT4.9 Then you get the reward!

• PPT4.10 the crown ( 1 Cor 9:25)

• PPT4.11The prize (2 Tim 4:7)

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day--and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”

Press on! Run your best. Aim to run a GOOD race- be a Christian who takes the ‘higher path’ rather than the path of mediocrity.

- Run to win & BE best- aware that JUST FINISHING is getting gold… winning..

…. And just THINK of the prize!
