THE LOVE OF MONEY
1 Timothy 6:6-12
I. THE DESIRE FOR MONEY (vs. 10).
A. Most of us desire money, at least to some extent. Money is needed to pay for the necessities of life.
B. We must guard against an excessive love of money and keep a proper perspective concerning it.
C. When the desire for money becomes an all-consuming drive, it is sinful.
D. God’s Word admonishes us to “flee these things and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness” (v. 11).
II. THE DECEPTION OF MONEY (vs. 10).
A. Satan tries to deceive God’s people everywhere. His prize tool is the love of money.
B. Satan tempts Christians to love their money and possessions more than they love God.
C. Prayer, perseverance, and the promises of God’s Word enable Christians to resist the devil, love God completely, and give him first place in their affections.
D. The Scripture urges “Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life” (v. 12).
III. THE DESTRUCTION THROUGH MONEY (vs. 10).
A. Millions of people have been destroyed by the love of money. They lie, steal, cheat, and even kill for money.
B. Money can be a blessing. It can bring glory to God if used correctly and unselfishly. However, the wrong use of money can bring destruction of body, mind, and soul.
C. The Bible says, “But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition” (v. 9).
D. Let us follow the scriptural admonition to “seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33).
