Summary: A message on the attributes of the Holy Spirit.

THREE ATTRIBUTES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Selected

INTRO: God has manifested himself in many ways to man. One of the ways is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is a personal form of God residing in mankind. The Holy Spirit has special powers at his command.

Today we will look at just three of the many powers that he possesses.

I. OMNIPRESENT—present everywhere at the same time (Psalm 139:7-13).

The Psalmist realizes that there is no place where God is not. There is no place where he can hide from God. He is in the heavens above, and the earth below. The Psalmist is in his hand (He’s got the whole world in his hand).

The Holy Spirit covered him in his mother’s womb, and throughout all of his life.

ILLUS: Like a parent who tells a child “I’ve got eyes in the back of my head.”

There is nothing we can do that God does not know. There is nowhere we can go that God is not there. There is nothing we can say that God does not hear. There is no place where we can hide from him. He is everywhere at all times.

II. OMNISCIENCE—knowledge of everything (1 Corinthians 2:10).

Paul instructs the church at Corinth that human wisdom is nothing compared to the knowledge of God. God knows all things. There are no secrets from him. They prided themselves in their great knowledge. Paul reminded them all knowledge is from God.

ILLUS: I don’t know if any of you are Star Trek fans or not. But I am reminded of one episode from the original where the alien characters had huge heads signifying they had all knowledge.

Every thought we have ever had, every word we have ever spoken, every deed we have ever done, all are know by God. With all of our intelligence, we have no knowledge all our own—it comes from God.

Man prides himself in his great wisdom, but it is nothing.

III. OMNIPOTENT—having all power (Luke 1:35; Romans 15:13, 19).

God has given the Holy Spirit all power to do all things. There is nothing he is not able to do. He had the power of God himself.

Before Jesus was born, the power of the Holy Spirit protected Jesus and his mother. He provided Paul the power he needed to preach the Gospel.

ILLUS: When the US dropped the Atomic Bomb, they thought it to be the most powerful thing in the world. Today it is small in comparison to the power of other things in existence.

God’s power is still present in the world today. He provides his people power to live for him today. He gives us power over Satan.

CONC: It should not frighten us because God knows everything about us. It should cause us to rejoice instead, because he cares enough about us to be concerned for our well being and protection.
