Summary: For man to be reconciled to God and have the relationship and fellowship with Him restored, it required redeeming man from the deadly consequence of sin.

REDEMPTION THROUGH HIS BLOOD

“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.” Ephesians 1:7

The word “redemption” means “the act or process of buying back”. When sin entered the human race through Adam it resulted in spiritual death for man. For man to be reconciled to God and have the relationship and fellowship with Him restored, it required redeeming man from the deadly consequence of sin.

THE NECESSITY OF REDEMPTION

Man’s Condition Required Tt:

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23

“For the wages of sin is death is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23 (NASB).

God’s Nature Required It:

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

God’s love prompted it:

God’s wisdom conceived it.

God’s holiness demanded it.

God’s only begotten Son provided it.

THE EXTENT OF REDEMPTION

Universally available: “And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for our only but also for the whole world.” I John 2:2

Completely efficacious: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” I John 1:9

Eternally enduring: “Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.” Hebrews 9:12. Jesus said: “And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish.” John 10:28

THE APPROPRIATION OF REDEMPTION

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9.

This verse tells us three great truths concerning redemption:

1. It cannot be obtained through any merit of our own.

2. It cannot be obtained through our own good works.

3. It comes only by His grace and through our faith.

THE VICTORY THAT REDEMPTION BRINGS

Our redemption comes only through the blood of our Lord Jesus. It is only "the blood-sprinkled path" that leads to salvation and eternal life.

The hymn writer, Fanny J. Crosby, captured the joy of redemption when she wrote:

Redeemed, how I love to proclaim it!

Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;

Redeemed through His infinite mercy,

His child, and forever, I am.

Redeemed, and so happy in Jesus!

No language my rapture can tell;

I know that the light of His presence

With me doth continually dwell.

I think of my blessed Redeemer,

I think of Him all the day long;

I sing, for I cannot be silent;

His love is the theme of my song.

I know I shall see in His beauty

The King in whose law I delight;

Who lovingly guardeth my footsteps

And giveth me songs in the night.

Redeemed, redeemed, redeemed

Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;

Redeemed, redeemed, redeemed,

His child, and forever, I am.
