Summary: The writer of Hebrews tells us who Jesus Christ is. He represents Him as being better then the angels, the prophets, or the law. As we examine Hebrews 1 my prayer is that you will listen as never before.

OUR GREAT SAVIOUR - Part 1

Hebrews 1:1-4

There is a difference between listening and hearing. Hearing is done with the ear, but listening is done with the mind and the heart! Matthew 13:15 For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. See Hebrews 3:7-8

There are many today who are hearing but not listening. It seems that what is spoken goes in one ear and out the other! If people today really understood who Jesus is, there would be more love, admiration & reverence for Him. John 14:21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me.

The writer of Hebrews tells us who Jesus Christ is. He represents Him as being better then the angels, the prophets, or the law. As we examine Hebrews 1 my prayer is that you will listen as never before. Notice we me...

#1. HOW GOD HAS SPOKEN – v 1-2, 4. God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,.. [4] Being made so much better than the angels,…

He has spoken to us by the prophets – v 1.

2 Peter 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Man Rejected Their Message – Acts 7:52 Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One. See Hebrews 11:32-37

He has spoken to us by angelic host – v 4. Angels appeared to: Abraham, Lot, Jacob, Moses, Isaiah. N.T. examples: Mary, Joseph, Zachariah.

Their message was only convincing to those to whom they were sent.

He has spoken to us by His Son – v 2. God, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds.

Prophets were maligned, mocked & murdered; Angels were doubted & feared. Jesus spoke of this in the parable of “The Householder” – Matthew 21:32-41

#2. WHO IS JESUS? It is significant that God says, in these last days (v 2).

Jesus is God’s last messenger – Luke 16:27-31 (The rich man in hell). This means we are living in The Last Days. On the Mount of Transfiguration, with Moses and Elijah, God said, This is my beloved Son, hear ye him. Mark 9:7

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. [14] And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us,…

1 Timothy 3:16 God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

Jesus is the heir of all things – v 2.

We may boast about what we own and posses. We may meet people who have gathered great wealth and envy them, BUT Jesus Christ is the true possessor of all things.

Listen to the Good News found in Romans 8:16-18

Jesus is the creator of all things – v 2.

Colossians 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:…

Jesus is the brightness of God’s glory – v 3a.

Brightness = shining forth. Glory = source of divine splendor.

John 8:12 I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

Revelation 21:23 The city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. 22:5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.

Jesus is the express image of God’s person – v 3b.

John 14:9 He that hath seen me hath seen the Father.

Colossians 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God.

Image = imprint, exact impression. If you want to know what God is like; exam Christ. He is God in focus!

John Philip’s says, “He is deity translated into humanity.”

Jesus is the sustainer of all things – v 3c.

Colossians 1:17 He is before all things, and by him all things consist.

Consist [Sunistao] strengthened; held together, made to stand, constituted.

Jesus is the purger of our sin – v 3d.

This verse takes us from Creation,.. to Calvary,.. to the Coronation.

We go from His Glory, to His Person, to His Power, to Our Sin. How wonderful is our God?

Jesus is seated in Heaven – v 3e.

Romans 8:34 It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

CONCLUSION: Hebrews 7:25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
