I. Introduction
Michelangelo is considered one of the greatest Renaissance painters and sculptors.
In talking about his sculpting, he said that he never created his great works; he discovered them. He said he uncovered them.
Using his famous statue of David as an example, he said God placed the art in the stone, and it was Michelangelo’s job to bring out what God had created. Trying to see what was waiting to be uncovered, he was known to stand in front of an unfinished piece and yell in frustration, “Come out!”
Michelangelo looked at a block of stone and told what God had created to come out. Michelangelo must have looked really weird talking to a big rock, but then again, he was one of the greatest painters and sculptors in the world. And I think we’d do well to look at a man like this and be encouraged by this example.
Tonight’s message is “Open Your Big Mouth: Speaking Your World Into Existence.” Do you realize that what you say determines your future? Do you understand the great power that is between your nose and chin? If not, by the end of this message, you will recognize that you have control over your destiny and you’ll be in a better position to be able to get what you want from God.
II. Say What?
Have you ever listened to yourself talk, like on a video or a cassette recorder? Were you shocked to realize what your voice sounds like? Were you pleased with the sound of your voice?
Have you ever listened to the content of what you say? You know, you tell a joke that nobody laughs at and you wish you never said anything at all. Or, you accidentally spill the beans on something you were supposed to keep a secret? What about the old murmuring thing when your mom tells you take out the trash? (frickafrackaicantbelieveigottatakeoutthetrashagainitshisturn and then mom hears and on top of taking out the trash, you have to take out some ice from the freezer to put on your swollen behind. Or, have you talked about somebody behind their back only to turn around and see that they were behind your back?
If any of those things have ever happened to you, you may have an understanding of just how powerful your big mouth is and what kind of trouble it can get you into. Well, it’s no big secret that your mouth is a pretty big tool. In fact, Bible writers found this out thousands of years ago.
Proverbs 18:21 “21Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
They wrote that the tongue is so powerful that it can bring life or death. Have you ever got in trouble with your parents from talking back and then thought to yourself “Oh, man, I’m dead meat”? Well, the life and death we’re talking about here ain’t just from your momma’s paddle. We’re talking about your very existence, how successful your life will truly be. It all begins with how you talk. And not just whether you talk like a gangsta, for sheezy, or you got a southern drawl, ya’ll, or you combine the two and whip out your sawed-off shotgun and bust a cap. No, we’re talking about the words that come out of that big mouth of yours. And instead of your words getting you in trouble, we’re gonna learn how to make your words work for you, not against you.
III. Put Your Words to Work
The Bible says that God framed the worlds by His words.
Hebrews 11:3 “3By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.”
In Genesis, you see this point in fact, God said . . . and it was.
Psalm 33:6,9 “6The LORD merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born. 9For when he spoke, the world began! It appeared at his command.”
God spoke and things came into existence. Out of nothing, came something. Out of darkness, came light. Why? Because God said, “Light, BE.”
Because God spoke things into existence, and created the natural realm with His words, natural things respond to the spoken word.
Luke 17:6 “6So the Lord said, "If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, "Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.”
Throughout Jesus’ ministry, we see him speaking to natural things and getting results, and not only that, but he tells us we can do the same thing.
IV. Whatever I Want, BE
Romans 4:17 17b God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did;
God calls those things that do not exist as though they did, therefore, we can call those things that do not exist as though they do. Well, how do I do that?
The first step is declaring what you want. It’s not about reading this certain script and inserting what you want at the end. It’s not some fancy smancy prayer that you say. You can say, “I call into existence a new 2004 Ford Expedition. I declare that it belongs to me.” You can go into detail about the specifics of what you want, the color, interior, whatever. Or, you can just say, “Expedition, BE.” And these natural things have to respond to your words.
What if you need money? What if you made a pledge to MFT and you haven’t put any money toward it? What if you need money for church camp and you forgot to participate in the fundraiser, and mom just spent her paycheck on the bills? Call it into existence. Say, “Money, COME” and it has to come to you.
It’s not about getting down on your knees and pleading with God like He’s this cosmic Santa Claus. It’s about speaking words of faith, the command of faith, and believing that what you say will come to pass.
When God created this world, you think He sat around with the mullygrubs wondering if the light would ever come on? Do you think he wavered in his confession? (Light, if you’re out there, would you please, please, please, maybe if you’re not too busy, turn on. World, umm, if you’re not too shy, can you show up?) No, he was bold. He knew that His words contained the power to create. And your words do, too.
Speak the things that you want.
Mark 5:24-29 AMP “24And Jesus went with him; and a great crowd kept following Him and pressed Him from all sides [so as almost to suffocate Him].
25And there was a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years,
26And who had endured much suffering under [the hands of] many physicians and had spent all that she had, and was no better but instead grew worse.
27She had heard the reports concerning Jesus, and she came up behind Him in the throng and touched His garment,
28For she kept saying, ‘If I only touch His garments, I shall be restored to health.’ 29And immediately her flow of blood was dried up at the source, and [suddenly] she felt in her body that she was healed of her [distressing] ailment.”
Here’s this woman, who had this pain for twelve years. She’d seen doctor after doctor, but never got any better. She kept saying, ‘If I can just touch Jesus’ clothes, I’ll be healed.” This woman spoke what she wanted, and boom, she got it.
You too, will get what you want, if you keep saying it.
V. Watch Your Mouth
Proverbs 21:23 “23 He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity.”
One thing you have to do when you’re opening your big mouth is to watch what you say. It’s really easy to slip up and make a bad confession. For instance, when you’ve got a sore back from bending over and washing cars all day, you might slip up and say something like, “Boy, my back is killing me.” Whoa, now. That sounds like calamity to me, destruction, death. So, the trick is to think before speaking.
You may have the thought, “Man, my back is killing me,” but you catch yourself before you say it. And instead, you say, “My body is healthy and whole and I feel GOOD!” And before you know it, that back pain is gone.
But you have to make a conscious effort to guard your big mouth, because if you’re not guarding your mouth, there’s no telling what will come out…and what comes out may not be what you want coming out.
Well, how do I guard my mouth? You can do a lot more than just thinking before speaking. Sure, that may catch the bad things before they come out, but if you’re not putting good things in your heart, you’ll have nothing to replace the bad things with.
Matthew 12:34b “34bFor out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.”
This Scripture says that whatever is in your heart is going to come out of your mouth. So, what have you been putting in your heart? What have you been listening to that has had an impact on your life and how you speak?
Are you listening to your friends? They’re saying, “You can’t raise that much money. You’ll never be able to lose weight. You won’t become a doctor, you made an F in biology.”
Are you listening to music that influences how you talk? “You’re getting closer, to pushing me off of life’s little edge cause I’m a loser and sooner or later you know I’ll be dead”, “I’m a loser baby, so why don’t you kill me?”
Are you watching TV sitcoms that constantly tell you that you’ll never amount to anything and that you’ll never be happy?
Are you reading your Bible and finding out that you can have the desires of your heart, that God will provide for you, that you’re an overcomer, that you can do anything you want to do, that God loves you and He’s for you? If you’re putting God’s word in your heart, your mouth will overflow with God’s word.
Psalm 119:11 “11I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”
When you hide God’s word in your heart and guard your mouth, you WILL keep yourself from calamity, destruction, and death.
Here are some words and phrases to look for when you’re guarding your mouth: I can’t, if, doubt, I don’t think, I don’t have the time, maybe, I’m afraid of, I don’t believe, it’s impossible.
Make these words a part of your vocabulary: I can, I will, expect the best, I know, I will make the time, positively, I am confident, I do believe, God is able.
