Summary: This is a sermon I did teaching about Communion prior to observing it.

Relationship is a beautiful thing. Perhaps one of the most influential relationships in this life is the one between Mother and child.

The sweetest sound to mortals given / Are heard in Mother, Home, and Heaven.

—William Goldsmith Brown, “Mother, Home, and Heaven”

No man is poor who has had a godly Mother. —Abraham Lincoln

However there are other relationships that are also very important especially in consideration of what we will observe today. The first two are obvious and not to be missed. They are the relationship of Christ’s body and blood to the bread and the wine (fruit of the vine). V. 24-25

But before we partake of those symbolic elements there are three other relationships that must be considered.

1. The first is our relationship with others. V. 18

Division has done more to hide Christ from the view of men than all the infidelity that has ever been spoken. —George Macdonald

2. The second is our relationship with oneself. Perhaps this can be better stated as our attitude concerning ourselves. V. 21-22

Temper is what gets most of us into trouble. Pride is what keeps us there. —Anonymous

3. The third is our relationship with the Lord. V. 28, 31

To do so no more is the truest repentance. —Martin Luther
