Summary: A July 4th message, the aim of this sermon is to show lost and saved alike that if you are saved you are no longer the person you used to be and that Christ doesn’t want us to live in our past.

Nota Bene: The main passage of the message omits verses 5-11

(This sermon was one in which I did not have a solid outline written out and basically took Scripture verses that I knew would work under each heading and let the Spirit lead me in the sermon’s direction in the midst of the message.)

I. What We Once Were

II. What We Are Now

III. What We Will Be

I. Verses to use –

(1Cor. 1:18 NASB) For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to

us who are being saved it is the power of God.

(Eph 2:8-9 ESV)

(8) For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,

(9) not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

(Rom 3:23 KJVR) For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

(Rom 6:23 ESV) For the wages of sin is death,

but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(John 8:31-32 NASB)

(31) So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My Word, then you are truly disciples of Mine;

(32) and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

(John 8:34-36 NASB)

(34) Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin.

(35) The slave does not remain in the house forever;

the son does remain forever.

(36) So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.

(Rom 7:7 NIV) What then shall we say? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed I would not have known what sin was except through the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “Do not covet.”

Segue – (Rom 8:37 ESV) No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

II. Verses to use –

(1Cor. 6:19-20 ESV)

(19) Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,

(20) for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

(1Cor. 10:13 ESV) No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

(Jam 1:2-4 ESV)

(2) Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds,

(3) for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.

(4) And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

(1Cor. 15:22 NASB) For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.

(2Cor. 5:17 NIV) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

Segue – (John 1:12 NIV) Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.

We are so different when we are saved that our spiritual DNA has changed. We are not all who we used to be, even though Satan wants to make us feel like we are.

III. Verses to use –

(Gal 4:7 ESV) So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

(Gal 4:7 MSG) Doesn’t that privilege of intimate conversation with God make it plain

that you are not a slave, but a child? And if you are a child, you’re also an heir, with complete access to the inheritance.

(Gal 3:26 NASB) For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

(2Pe 3:13-14 NASB)

(13) But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.

(14) Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless, and blameless.

(Rev 19:8 NASB) It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.

(Rev 14:12 MSG) Meanwhile, the saints stand passionately patient, keeping God’s commands, staying faithful to Jesus.
