INTRODUCTION

Comparison between Hook and Fishing

TRANS: Matthew 5:16

In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good WORKS (deeds) and glorify your Father in heaven.

"WORK while it’s day, the night comes when no one can work" (John 9:4). To remember always that we must do works as Jesus works out a miracle, let us study an acrostic of W-O-R-K-S.

I. W-WORD OF GOD

Verse 1: One day Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret with the people crowding around him and listening to the WORD OF GOD,

*before any catching or fishing can be accomplished the Word of God is necessary

A. It is a command

B. It is a direction

C. It is an instruction

II. O - OBEDIENCE

Verse 5: Simon answered, master, we’ve work hard all night and haven’t caught anything. BECAUSE YOU SAY SO, I will let down the nets.

*the Word of God must be obeyed.

A. Action based on the Word

B. Action displaying attitudes

C. Action proves one who listens

Greek word: HUPAHUOU - means to listen, to submit, to know.

Note: The root words of obey and listen are the same; thus you can never claim to be listening unless you obey.

III. R - RESPONSE

Verses 6-7: When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their net began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

A. People obey

B. Nature obey

*Even nature, fishes, and the sea respond to the Word of God (combined with man’s obedience)

IV. K - KNOWLEDGE

Verses 8-11: When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, "Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!" For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, "Don’t be afraid; from now on you will catch men." So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

A. By the experience of faith and obedience to God.

B. By the knowledge as a result of the WORD.

C. By the knowledge as a result of the OBEDIENCE.

D. By the knowledge as a result of the RESPONSE.

E. By the knowledge as a result of the EXPERIENCE.

F. By the knowledge as a result of the person and POWER of JESUS!

*Practical Application of the Word: It brings about knowledge.

V. S - SERVICE

Verse 11: So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed HIM!

* As one is filled with the knowledge, it is not enough that it remains only in his mind, but it must result in SERVICE to the kingdom of God.

A. As a worshipper.

B. As a worker and disciple.

C. As a warrior.

CONCLUSION:

The net only works when people pull together on the same direction. God has entrusted the mission of global evangelization not to the angels but to human beings by His grace to make a big network around the world so they can experience His love. The distance between the miracle catch is your obedience to His command.
