Summary: The Downward Steps of Eve

Adam & Eve

JOKE:

Contrary to popular belief, it wasn’t the apple on the tree that got us banished from Paradise.

It was the pair on the ground.

JOKE:

A family came home from Church where the sermon was on Adam and Eve. The Mother noticed the boy sitting on the bed feeling his ribs. She asked what he was doing.

He said, "I counted my ribs 3 times now. Ma !!! I think I’m having a wife."

Let’s turn to Gen. 3:1-15

READ TEXT

Scripture is plan when it says:

1 Tim 2:14

14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. KJV

But Adam is not without fault. It was Adam that was given Dominion over all creation and he lost this after his sin.

But let me give you the version I enjoy reading.

Gen 3:1-15 NLT

Now the serpent was the shrewdest of all the creatures the LORD God had made. "Really?" he asked the woman. "Did God really say you must not eat any of the fruit in the garden?"

2 "Of course we may eat it," the woman told him. 3 "It’s only the fruit from the tree at the center of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God says we must not eat it or even touch it, or we will die."

4 "You won’t die!" the serpent hissed. 5 "God knows that your eyes will be opened when you eat it. You will become just like God, knowing everything, both good and evil."

Some think that she saw the serpent eat of that tree, and that he told her he thereby had gained the faculties of speech and reason, whence she inferred its power to make one wise, and was persuaded to think, "If it made a brute creature rational, why might it not make a rational creature divine?" See here how the desire of unnecessary knowledge, under the mistaken notion of wisdom, proves hurtful and destructive to many.

6 The woman was convinced. The fruit looked so fresh and delicious, and it would make her so wise! So she ate some of the fruit. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her. Then he ate it, too. 7 At that moment, their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they strung fig leaves together around their hips to cover themselves.

Christ is a tree to be desired to make one wise, Col 2:3; 1 Cor 1:30. Let us, by faith, feed upon him, that we may be wise to salvation. In the heavenly paradise, the tree of knowledge will not be a forbidden tree; for there we shall know as we are known. Let us therefore long to be there, and, in the mean time, not exercise ourselves in things too high or too deep for us, nor covet to be wise above what is written.

2 Tim 3:7

7 Ever learning , and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. KJV

Verse 6 – Contains the three common temptations of man:

Lust of the Flesh – She saw it as good for food (Satisfying)

Lust of the Eye – It was Pleasant to the Eye (Appealing)

Pride of Life – A tree to be desired to make one wise

1 John 2:16

16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh , and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

8 Toward evening they heard the LORD God walking about in the garden, so they hid themselves among the trees. 9 The LORD God called to Adam, "Where are you?"

10 He replied, "I heard you, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked." (Naked = Without)

11 "Who told you that you were naked?" the LORD God asked. "Have you eaten the fruit I commanded you not to eat?"

12 "Yes," Adam admitted, "but it was the woman you gave me who brought me the fruit, and I ate it."

13 Then the LORD God asked the woman, "How could you do such a thing?"

"The serpent tricked me," she replied. "That’s why I ate it."

14 So the LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, you will be punished. You are singled out from all the domestic and wild animals of the whole earth to be cursed. You will grovel in the dust as long as you live, crawling along on your belly. 15 From now on, you and the woman will be enemies, and your offspring and her offspring will be enemies. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." NLT

THE DOWNWARD STEPS OF SIN

These are steps that lead toward the PIT.

Rev 20:1-3

20:1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up KJV

These are DOWNWARD steps

Notice these 5 steps:

First

She saw.

She should have turned away and not looked at the serpent

A great deal of sin comes in at the eyes.

Lust of the eye ( 1 John 2:16)

The eye affects the heart.

Matt 5:28

28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. KJV

1 Tim 2:9-10

9 that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. KJV

Luke 11:34

34 the light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light: but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness. KJV

First – She saw

Secondly

She took.

It was her own action not someone else’s. The devil did not take it, and put it into her mouth, but she herself took it.

• Satan may tempt, but he cannot force

• Satan may persuade us to cast ourselves down, but he cannot cast us down

Matt 4:6

6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. KJV

• Eve was just as guilty as Achan when he took the accursed thing at Jericho.

First – She saw

Secondly – She took

Thirdly

She did eat.

Perhaps she did not intend to go any further when she looked

Perhaps she did not intend to eat it when she took it

You may not have the chance to – NOT LOOK

But you certainly have the ability to – NOT TAKE

Once you TAKE – you will more than likely CONSUME IT

James 4:3

3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. KJV

James 1:14-16

14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

16 Do not err, my beloved brethren. KJV

Note, The way of sin is downhill; a man cannot stop himself when he wants after he has begun the slide down the slippy slope of sin.

Our first reaction to temptation is to curb it.

One man made a million dollars out of the phrase:

Nip it! Nip it in the Bud!

The Latin translation of scripture is OBSTA PRINCIPIIS

Nip mischief in the bud

Not only is it WISE, but it is what God would have us to do.

First – She saw

Second – She took

Third – She ate

Fourthly

She gave also to her husband with her.

From scripture, we get the picture that when Eve meets the old Serpent, Adam is not with her. Surely if he had been with her he would have prevented her from taking the fruit and yielding to the temptation. That is what a help meet does.

From verse 6, we can understand that Adam was with Eve when she ate the fruit. Read verse 6 with me.

Gen 3:6

6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. KJV

Maybe when she left the serpent, Eve first went to Adam and told him the same things Satan had told her. Persuading him with the same arguments that the serpent had used with her.

Then after she had eaten and she did not die, she gave it to him and his lust conceived itself and brought forth sin.

EVE, as soon as she became a sinner, she also became a tempter.

EVERYONE listen to me just a minute:

Why do I warn you not to hang around people who are doing wrong? Because those who yield to sin are more willing to draw you into the same sin with them.

First – She saw

Second – She took

Third – She ate

Fourth – She gave

Fifth

He did eat

Maybe Adam was overcome by his wife’s wearisome persistence. It doesn’t matter the reason – the truth is – Adam failed God and transgressed, sinned against him.

We can try to make all the excuses we want to but it is just simply OUR FAULT if we SIN. Not someone else’s fault.

LISTEN: Listen to me for a moment.

REALLY! Her first downward step was that SHE LISTENED TO SATAN

LISTEN to this very closely:

Do you even realize what the Sin was? Do you understand why this Sin caused the Fall of Mankind?

It involved the disbelief of God’s Word

And

Confidence in the Devil’s word

Satan is still playing the same Sin game today.

If he can just get you to

• LOOK HIS WAY – Eve Saw

• TAKE WHAT HE OFFERS – She Took

• TASTE IT – She Ate

• SHARE IT WITH SOMEONE ELSE – She Gave

• THEY EAT - THEN YOU HAVE LED SOMEONE ELSE ASTRAY WITH YOU

What were the downward steps of Eve?

First – She saw

Second – She took

Third – She ate

Fourth – She gave

Fifth - He did eat

Don’t take the First Step and you will never take Steps 2 - 5
