Summary: Yes, God is an omnipotent, all powerful Lord. However, there are four things that He cannot do!

“4 Things God Cannot Do!”

TEXT: Nahum 1:3-6 (NKJV)

“The LORD is slow to anger and great in POWER, and will not at all acquit the wicked. The LORD has His way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of His feet. He rebukes the sea and makes it dry, and dries up all the rivers. Bashan and Carmel wither, and the flower of Lebanon wilts. The mountains quake before Him, the hills melt, and the earth heaves at His presence, yes, the world and all who dwell in it. Who can stand before His indignation? And who can endure the fierceness of His anger? His fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by Him. The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble. And He knows those who trust in Him.”

Jeremiah 32:17

“Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great POWER and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You.”

INTRODUCTION:

The Holy Scriptures are replete with instances in which the POWER OF GOD is mentioned:

God is absolute!

He possesses total POWER!

He possesses total WISDOM!

He possesses total LIBERTY & total DOMINION!

Luke 1:37

The Angel Gabriel announces to Mary, “For with God nothing shall be impossible.”

Psalms 135:6

“Whatever the LORD pleases He does, In heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deep places.”

God is able to stop the Earth from rotating on it’s axis… (Joshua 10:13)

The Red Sea felt the breath of Almighty God as a strong, east wind; and the waters rolled back…

The rough, rugged terrain of Mt. Sinai became HOLY GROUND when God appeared in a burning bush that was not consumed…

God has POWER over men and angels, nature and nations, Satan and death!

God’s POWER has been known to LEVEL MOUNTAINS!

1. Hold back the STORM!

2. He COMMANDS devils and angel!

3. He hurls WORLDS into existence!

4. He owns the CATTLE on a thousands hills!

Isaiah 66:1-2

“Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool. For all those things My hand has made, and all those things exist,

says the LORD.”

“Who can impose LIMITS on an omnipotent God?”

HOWEVER, THERE ARE 4 THINGS THAT GOD CANNOT DO!

I. GOD CANNOT LIE!

John 14:17 says that He is “...the Spirit of Truth…”

1 Samuel 15:29 says “He who is the glory of Israel [God] does not lie or change his mind; for He is not a man, that He should change His mind.”

Since God cannot lie...

Proverb 30:5 “EVERY word of God is flawless.”

EVERY PROMISE IS TRUE!

Psalms 1:1-3

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.”

GOD CANNOT LIE!

Luke 24:49

“Behold, I send the PROMISE of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with POWER from on high.”

GOD CANNOT LIE!

John 6:53-54

Jesus said, “I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”

GOD CANNOT LIE!

John 14:2-3

“In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I WILL COME AGAIN and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”

GOD CANNOT LIE!

FOR GOD TO LIE WOULD BE AGAINST HIS NATURE!

II. GOD CANNOT CHANGE WHO HE IS!

Malachi 3:6

“For I am the LORD, I do not change.”

1. This World has a certain mindset on what kind of God they

want.

a) A God offers a lot of benefits, BUT doesn’t require a lot of RESPONSIBILITY!

b) A God who WINKS at sin…

c) A God who says “YES” to all that we ask…

d) A God who is not too DEMANDING!

e) A God who punishes sin, BUT OVERLOOKS yours…

f) A God who doesn’t get in the way of our leisure and pleasure… BUT is there when we need Him!

Hebrews 13:8

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”

1 John 4:7-8

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for GOD IS LOVE.” That is His NATURE!

III. GOD CANNOT FAIL!

1. John 11 when Lazarus died.

a) Jesus was a close family friend… He felt something of the pain and despair of the family.

b) The reaction of Martha was, "If You had been here, he wouldn’t have died!"

c) She might as well have said, "It’s too late now. It’s beyond your ability Lord!"

Another way of saying, "You didn’t get here in time Lord!”

You’ve FAILED!

They simply didn’t realize that there is no case too hopeless for the Lord!!

1. Jairus’ daughter in Matthew 9.

a) Before Jesus could get to the sick girl, she died, and the message came, "Trouble the Master no further - it’s too late - she’s dead!"

b) But IT WASN’T TOO LATE!!

Jesus went and raised the little girl back to life! HE DID NOT FAIL JAIRUS IN HIS REQUEST FOR HELP!

2. God Cannot Fail!

a) He never failed Paul & Silas in the prison house…

b) He never failed Daniel in the lions den…

c) He never failed the 3 Hebrew children in the fiery flames!

3. God has never failed his children!

a) For just as it would seem that all hope was lost, GOD WOULD ALWAYS ARIVE!

b) Yes, He is an ON- Time God, Yes He is!

IV. GOD CANNOT UNDO WHAT HAS

ALREADY BEEN DONE!

If God allowed Himself to undo what has been done surely He would have undone Satan’s rebellion and Adam’s fall.

But God gave to man and the angels free will, therefore their actions carry a sense of finality.

And the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that thou hast done?” (Genesis 3:13)

God cannot undo your sinful deeds…or else He would!

God cannot unsay your sinful words…or else He would!

God cannot un-think your sinful thoughts…or else He would!

Because:

"As I live! declares the Lord God, ’I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked should turn from his way and live." (Ezekiel 33:11.)

CONCLUSION:

God cannot forgive you unless you repent.
