JESUS HELPS WITH DEATH
John 11:1-46
INTRO: Many different people help with death. Doctors and nurses work to prevent death and to help people die in comfort. Insurance personnel urge people to protect loved ones. Funeral directors help bury the body. Many people help us with our deaths.
Jesus helped Martha and Mary with the death of their brother Lazarus. Jesus is the best help when death is involved. Let us see how He helps.
I. JESUS COMES TO BE WITH US.
Mary and Martha sent for their friend, Jesus, when their brother became ill. For some reason, Jesus did not depart to Mary and Martha for two days. When He did arrive, Martha reprimanded Jesus for being late. Lazarus had died. Nonetheless, Jesus comforted Mary and Martha with his presence.
Nothing brings more comfort to a dying person than to know of Jesus’ presence with him. Also, when a loved one dies, we have the assurance of the Lord’s presence. Just being there helps with death.
II. JESUS SHARES OUR SORROWS.
When Mary and Martha took Jesus to the place of Lazarus’ tomb, He became troubled. He wept. He grieved over the loss of a friend, the invasion of death, and the skepticism of the Jews. Jesus grieved with His friends.
Perhaps some of the greatest help with grief is to have fellow grievers. Believe me, Jesus weeps with us. He shares our sorrows.
III. JESUS TEACHES US ABOUT THE FUTURE.
Read carefully Jesus’ words recorded in vv. 25-26. Jesus taught Mary and Martha that He would enable Lazarus to live beyond the grave.
CONC: Only Christ has the answer to death. He defeated death with His resurrection. Would you like someone to help you with your certain death? Get some insurance. Make provision for burial. But, most of all, get help from Jesus.
