Summary: God’s might is our protection over our enemies.

INTRODUCTION

Coronation Psalm

If God is with us who can be against us?

I. HE IS THE MIGHTY RULER, 1-3

-It is the Lord’s decree, establishing His anointed as His regent in the face of all opposition. (see 2:7-12)

A. Sitting at the Right Hand, 1 (place of honor)

B. Ruling in the midst of His enemies, 2

“Stretch forth your strong scepter”---He will widen His kingdom even when all the kings of the earth join their forces together and surround Him.

C. Leading a mighty army, 3

Dressed in priestly garb and prepared for a holy war—both powers belongs to God: spiritual and physical powers. The heaven’s power and earthly power; so, all powers belongs to God.

II. HE IS THE MIGHTY CONQUEROR, 5-7 (He is the one who fights the battle)

A. Coming in the Highest Order, 4

-Chief representative of the Most High. Refer to Abraham’s offering to Melchizedek after he rescued Lot during the war of the kings in Genesis 14 (see also Hebrews 7:22-25; “able to save forever those who draw near to God through him”).

B. Crushing all the Earthly Rulers, 5-6

-The word of Hebrews 7:1 is not crushing but slaughter, it is a gory way to describe what he is able to do with the enemies. This depicts victory. It is an imagery of the battles and victory of David, the Lord’s anointed, during his reign and conquest. So, all that oppose the Kingdom of God and its stretching of the scepter (verse 2) is assured of defeat

C. Controlling all the affairs of men, 7 (Psalm 27:6)

-The one who grants him succession will set him in authority. He will control everything that comes the way of the propagation of the kingdom. “Drink from the brook…lift up his head”, this is how Gideon ‘s 300 drank from the stream. Even in the heat of the battle He will find refreshment and lift up his head with undiminished vigor. At one point David was thirsty, his soldier went behind enemy line just to take water for him and they succeeded. Even that God will do just to show his control over our enemies.

CONCLUSION

We don’t have enemies like David had. He fought many armies of other gods. According to Paul, our fight is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers, against powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places (Ephesians 6:11). But one thing is sure God the Almighty is fighting with us and leading this battle. We are assures of victory.
