Reasons to Fear Not Psalm 46

GOD IS OUR REFUGE and strength

Note

(1) The Refuge - "God is our refuge."

We are Confronted by the:-

(a) Necessity of the Refuge - Jeremiah 12 v. 5 "If thou hast run with the footmen, and they have wearied thee, then how canst thou contend with horses? and if in the land of peace, wherein thou trustedst, they wearied thee, then how wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan?" - "How wilt thou do?"

(b) Nature of the Refuge - "God is our refuge"

It's a:-

(1) Personal Refuge - (based on a person) God

i.e. his peace, his presence, and his power

(2) Powerful Refuge - God - refuge and strength -

2 Corinthians 12 v. 9 "And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me."

(3) Practical Refuge - "A very present help in trouble"

Isaiah 12 v. 2 "Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation."

(4) Purposeful Refuge - v. 2 "Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;"

earth be removed (change hands) Assyrians assault on Jerusalem in Hezekiah's time - Job - "Though he slay me yet will I trust him"

Why? because of the:-

Sufficiency of our Refuge

Stability of our Refuge

Supremacy of our Refuge - Exodus 15 v. 11 "Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?"

(c) Notability of the Refuge - "God is" How comforting is:-

His Power, His Presence ("best of all God is with us"), His Peace -

Mark 4 v. 37 "And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full." "A great storm of wind." v. 39 "And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm." His Protection - Psalm 23 v. 4 "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me."

GOD IS OUR RIVER

(2) The River - v. 4 "There is a river" 4 There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.

Hezekiah diverted the spring of the river Gihon in the Kidron Valley through solid rock into a pool in the city.

Note the river of God's grace is:-

(a) Full - v. 4 "The streams whereof."

(b) Free - Isaiah 55 v. 1 & 2 "Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness."

(c) Flowing perpetually -

Note:-

(1) God the Father -is the fountain of living water -

Jeremiah 2 v. 13 "For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water."
