Summary: This uses the story of David and Mephibosheth to illustrate how Christ has redeemed us. Mephibosheth was Remembered by the king, Rescued by the King and Restored by the king.

I. Introduction

a. At the end of 1 Samuel, Saul and Jonathan were killed by the Philistines.

i. In the first few chapters of 2 Samuel David becomes king over Judah first, then Israel.

b. 2 Samuel 4:4 talks about Mephibosheth.

i. Mephibosheth had the inheritance of the kingdom, but he was crippled and a crippled person could not be king.

ii. Mephibosheth means “Scattered in Shame”

c. Do we ever feel shameful?

i. There is hope for us just as there was hope for Mephibosheth.

II. He was Remembered by the King (1-3)

a. David remembered his friend Jonathan. David remembered that he had a son but he wasn’t sure who had been killed.

i. God has remembered us. Romans 5:6-8

b. Ziba describes him as crippled.

i. Sometimes the things people remember us for are things we are proud of.

ii. God remembers us for who we are; Someone in need of his grace

III. He was Rescued by the King (4-6)

a. Mephibosheth was living in a place called Lo Debar.

i. The name literally means, NO THING.

b. Mephibosheth was brought from nothing to the palace.

i. Many of us are in nothing, The king wants us to see his palace.

ii. God has rescued us (John 14:1-6)

IV. He was Restored by the King (7-11)

a. David restored Mephibosheth’s

b. Property

i. David gave him the land that belonged to Saul. (7)

c. Power

i. David Gave him the servants of Saul (8-10)

d. Position

i. Mephibosheth was like the son of the king (11)

e. Mephibosheth knew he was undeserving but David Restored him.

i. God has restored us. (John 1:12)

ii. John 1:12 – Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God - (NIV)

V. Conclusion

a. Have you been remembered by the King?

b. Have you been rescued by the King?

c. Have you been restored by the King?
