Remembrance, Until He Comes

Summary: Our Warrant for Communion.
REMEMBRANCE, UNTIL HE COMES.
“Don’t look back,” people may say. Yet there is a time when we must pause and recollect. Communion is just such a time.
We look back to “the night when He was betrayed” (1 Corinthians 11:23). What night was that? It was Passover night: and Passover itself looks back to the deliverance of Israel from Egypt.
Yet our reflections at Communion are not just dead memories, but a living remembrance (1 Corinthians 11:24-25). Just as Israel remembers the angel of death “passing over” the houses with sacrificial blood on the doorposts and the lintels, so we commemorate the One slain for us that we might be made free from the bondage of sin and of death.
We remember that death could not hold Him, and that on the third day He rose again. We call to mind His ascension into heaven, and His continual intercession at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. We enjoy the present restoration of the Holy Spirit, and look forward to the return in glory of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 11:26).
