REVELATION OF GOD’S NATURE THROUGH HIS NAMES.
1.JESUS
Matthew 1;21
The name Jesus means that he will save his people from their sins. It is the only name which brings hope to sinful humanity.It reveals the nature of God to save sinners.Jesus did not come to destroy sinners but to save them. Through this name Jesus we understand the heart and desire of God to rescue perishing humanity.
2.EMMANUEL
Matthew 1;23
The name Emmanuel mean God with us . It reminds us of the the constant presence of God in our lives.On a cloudy day we may not see the sun but it is still shining. In the same way even though sometimes we may not feel that God is with us still we know He is with us.He will never leave us alone or forsake us. He name is Emmanuel the one who is always with us.
3.JEHOVAH-RAPHA
Exodus 15;26 , Matthew 8;16-17
The name Jehovah-Rapha means ’Iam the Lord that healeth thee’ .It is God’s nature to heal.Jesus came to reveal God to us. When Jesus was in this world He was constantly healing the sick.From this we understand the nature and the desire of God. God wants to heal and make us whole.
4.JEHOVAH-JIREH
Exodus 22;14 , Deutronomy 8;3
The name Jehovah means ’the Lord is our provider ’. We must look to God to meet our needs.The Lord sent the people of Israel through the wilderness to teach them to depend upon Him.In the wilderness there was no source of help for them.They had to look to God for every need. But God proved that He can meet their need even in the wilderness.God can meet our need even when there is no source of help for us.
5.JEHOVAH-SHALOM
The name Jehovah -Shalom means that God is our peace.In this troubled world we must experience God as our peace.Jesus did leave behind great material wealth or resources for his disciples when he left this world .But He left behind his peace for them.This peace does not depend on the outward situation. Even in the midst of danger and suffering we can experience this peace in our hearts.
6.JEHOVAH-NISSI
Exodus 17;15 , Psalm 24;8,10 , Psalm3;3
The name Jehovah-Nissi means the Lord is our banner of victory. He is the lord of hosts and commands the vast heavenly army.He will fight the battle for us and give us the vistory. He will lift our head and honour us.We need not fear shame and failure when we have God as our Jehovah-Nissi.
7.EVERLASTING FATHER
Isaiah 9;6 , Psalm 68;5 , Psalm 103;13
Our God is a father to us. No religion or philosophy portrays God as a father to us. But in Jesus Christ we have God our heavenly father who loves us and cares for us. We can go boldly into his presence and receive help and mercy in times of need.
