THE PROBLEM OF SIN Isa 59:1-2 Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. 2. THE POWER OF SIN Rom 7:18-20 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. A. The Abandonment Sin Brings [1] Sin Abandons All Righteousness Isa 66:3 Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations. [2] Sin Abandons All Reasoning 2Co 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. [3] Sin Abandons All Responsibility How long halt ye between two opinions? [a] SIN will cause Man to Abandon His Faith [b] SIN will cause Man to Abandon His Family [c] SIN will cause Man to Abandon His Fellowship [d] SIN will cause Man to Abandon His Future B. The Association Sin Brings [1] It will Associate You With The Carnal 2Ti 4:10 For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; [2] Associate You With The Corrupt Mt 26:14 Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests, Mt 24:9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake. [3] Associate You With The Condemned How long halt ye between two Mt 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. C. The Aggravation Sin Brings How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word. Rev. 3 v 15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. 16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. D. The Accusation Sin Brings And the people answered him not a word. II. THE RESTORATION OF A SACRED COMMITMENT

Our text speaks of the Burnt Offering. It was a freewill offering that represented Israels reverence for Jehovah. 1. THE PROPOSAL OF THE PROPHET v.23-24 23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: A. The Test Of Their Religion Real Faith that is God given has no need to fear examination. B. The Telling Of Their Restraint "put NO fire under it" C. The Truth Of Their Revelation [1] It Restricts The Sensational [2] It Requires The Supernatural D. The Trust Of Their Response "it is well spoken" 2. THE PREPARATION OF THE PROPHET v.29-35 A. Elijah Repaired The Altar Of the LORD v. 32 And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD B. Elijah Remembered The Word Of The LORD v.36 and that I have done all these things at thy word. Ps 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. C. Elijah Reverenced The Person Of The LORD v.36 LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word. 3. THE PRAYER OF THE PROPHET v. 37 Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again A. The Simplicity Of His Prayer B. THE REVELATION OF A SOVEREIGN’S CHARACTER V 38 Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. 1.
