But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” - James 4:6
It is a sin we have all had at one point and even continue to deal with everyday as believers. It is the first sin in the Bible and could be said it is the root of all sin or the worst sin. What sin are we talking about? Pride. Satan fell from heaven and was cast down because of his pride. The Bible warns us not to elevate young believers to the position of Bishop for they could fall into the same condemnation of the devil through pride. We are never safe from this sin no matter if we are young or old in the Lord. You can be proud that you have achieved much or you could be proud that you have achieved little. This sin is embedded into the fallen flesh nature we have. The early church father Saint Chrysostom said: "Run from pride, for it is a passion more treacherous than any other."
So what is the remedy, how do we stay safe from this sin. One thing is to recognize that God opposes the proud and those who accept pride as ok. This should put a fear of God in us that we can be in a dangerous place in our walks with Jesus when we allow pride to come in. But look at the passage, it says "God gives grace." Oh what a wonderful blessing to know God will give us grace to remain humble if we ask him for it. He is more willing then we are to help us remain humble in our circumstances and ministry. And not only that he gives the grace to us but will give favour to us when we are humble. The favour of God is a wonderful place to be knowing the Heavenly Father has us in a open place of safety where we can rest, be encouraged and strengthened. The picture is of an open field, free from predators and the Shepherd safely watching us his flock. Take rest in God today as you humble yourself. We are nobodies, but in Jesus Christ we are a somebody find your identity and glorying only in Him and His work in you. Run from Pride!
