  • Looking In God's Mirror

Contributed by Bruce Hadley on Jul 27, 2021
     | 221 views

James compares the Word of God to a mirror because you look into a mirror to be able to see yourself in effort to make changes to your appearance. Looking in the Holy Scriptures is like looking in a mirror. It reveals to us as God sees what’s in us.

James 1:22-24 22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. ...read more

  • Religion That Makes A Difference Series

Contributed by David Owens on Jul 5, 2021
     | 669 views

James uses very confrontational language as he drives home the point that if we don't put God's Word into practice, then why did we bother to hear it. Religion that makes a difference is religion leads to godly language, godly love, and godly lifestyle.

Introduction: A. I heard about a man who came into worship late one Sunday. 1. He asked someone in the back of the auditorium, “Is the sermon done yet?” 2. I may sound a little nasally this morning. The pollen count is up. The grass grows. AND it needs cut. SPEAKING OF GRASS Did you ever notice there are things that hide in the grass? In his ‘Parable of the Acorn’ Lyman Abbot wrote, I pluck an acorn from the greensward and hold it to my ear, ...read more

Is it too much? Is it too hard? Sometimes when we read the Bible, we wonder, can it really be done? It seems like so much, it seems like such a high standard. I’ve wondered that at times.

"I've read that when Edward VI, the king of England in the 16th century, attended a worship service, he stood while the Word of God was read. He took notes during this time and later studied them with great care. Through the week he earnestly tried to apply them to his life. That's the ...read more
