Where there is fear there is no faith

Everybody is afraid of something. Fear steals our faith. Where there is fear there is no faith, fear is the absence of faith. "Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death that is the devil and ...read more

True joy does not come from pleasing ourselves, but from pleasing God and from serving others.

Philippians 1:19-26 Sunday, February 3, 2002 There are times when we make Paul’s first imprisonment in Rome seem like it was a rather comfortable situation. He lived in his own home. He could have visitors whenever he chose. We even seem to take his eventual release as a foregone ...read more

This is an Easter message using the Text from Luke 24 about Jesus’ encounter with the two disciples "On the Road to Emmaus."

On the Road to Emmaus --Luke 24:13-35 I relate well to the story of “The Walk to Emmaus.” On Saturday, May 9, 1992, I ran the 12 K or 7.46 mile Arts Fest Run from Henderson, Kentucky, to downtown Evansville, Indiana, in a time of 56:56.38. That’s a pace of 7:37.96 per mile and was my ...read more

Jesus died for the church, wherein we find our greatest selves.

Jesus and the Church For hours on a spring day, Jesus hung on the Roman cross, jeered at by those of his nation- the Jews- and Gentile Romans, alike. Those who had sought him during his ministry turned on him. He was abandoned by those too fearful to be identified with him. His closest friends ...read more

  • You Missed The Point

Why do we scold fathers on Father’s Day, when it is often that their children simply miss hearing their counsel. The sons of Josiah ignored their grounding in God’s word and the support of the Temple and misunderstood the value of hard work.

The difference between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day is that we honor our mothers but we scold our fathers. We talk of saintly moms, who wore their fingers to the bone to cook and clean and sow for us. We honor them for their industry, their mother wit, and their prayer life. And that is as it ...read more

  • Carry Each Other's Burdens Series

When we walk alongside those who are weary or wiped out, we’re acting like Jesus did. If we truly care for others, we’ll care enough to confront sin and carry burdens.

Carry Each Other’s Burdens I’ve not watched a lot of the American Idol TV show, but I’ve seen enough to know that Simon Cowell, one of the talent judges, enjoys tearing down the talentless. Here are some of his cutting comments: “If you lived 2,000 years ago and sang like that, they would have ...read more
