Summary: Here’s a sermon that deals with the way sexual abuse destroys lives. The story of Marilyn Monroe is used to illustrate the points.

Hebrews 13:1-4

1 Let brotherly love continue.

2Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels.

3Remember the prisoners as if chained with them--those who are mistreated--since you yourselves are in the body also.

4Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

God made human beings as sexual creatures.

We were created the desire and ability

to share physical intimacy with one another.

As a creation of God, the sex act is both pure and beautiful,

Eccles. 3:11 He has made everything beautiful in its time.

Sex is pure and beautiful only if it is exercised

within the guidelines of God’s will.

But just as men have often misused and degraded

the good things that God has given them,

the sex act has also been perverted by man.

Though the church regards sex as being a private matter,

the world openly advertises its message of sexual freedom.

All of us have been affected directly or indirectly…

By the misuse of sex.

For this reason we must teach what God’s word has to say

concerning moral sexual conduct.

The Bible doesn’t ignore the subject of sex

and neither should the church!

Sexual abuse continues to destroy numerous lives!

Today’s story is about a little girl by the name of Norma Jean Mortenson. Norma’s mother, Mrs. Gladys Baker, was periodically committed to a mental institution and Norma Jean spent much of her childhood in foster homes. In one of those foster homes, when she was eight years old, one of the boarders raped her and gave her a nickel.

He said, “Here, Honey. Take this and don’t ever tell anyone what I did to you.” When little Norma went to her foster mother to tell her what had happened she was beaten badly. She was told, “Our boarder pays good rent. Don’t you ever say anything bad about him!” Norma at the age of 8 had learned what it was to be used and given a nickel and beaten for trying to express the hurt that was in her.

Point #1

There Is the Sin of Rape

Deut. 22:25 "But if a man finds a betrothed young woman in the countryside, and the man forces her and lies with her, then only the man who lay with her shall die. 26 But you shall do nothing to the young woman; there is in the young woman no sin deserving of death, for just as when a man rises against his neighbor and kills him, even so is this matter. 27 For he found her in the countryside, and the betrothed young woman cried out, but there was no one to save her.

Why would God have called for the death penalty for a rapist?

Because rape causes serious emotional damage to the woman.

I wonder what affect that rape had on 8 year old Norma Jean.

We’re going to see later that it had a horrible affect on her!

That shouldn’t surprise us!

The Bible tells us that one of King David’s sons…

Raped his half sister, Tamar.

How did that affect her life?

2 Samuel 13:19-20 Then Tamar put ashes on her head, and tore her robe of many colors that was on her, and laid her hand on her head and went away crying bitterly. 20 And Absalom her brother said to her, "Has Amnon your brother been with you? But now hold your peace, my sister. He is your brother; do not take this thing to heart." So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Absalom’s house.

Tamar never got over that horrible attack!

She remained depressed for the rest of her life!

A rapist is a greedy person!

He doesn’t care how this will affect the woman!

He cares only about his greedy desire for sex!

Listen to 1 Thes. 4:4-7

4 that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, 5 not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God; 6 that no one should take advantage of and defraud his brother in this matter, because the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also forewarned you and testified. 7 For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness.

Greed carries with it the thought of unscrupulously grabbing

what doesn’t belong to you!

Paul uses the same Greek word here in 1 Thessalonians 4:6

to describe a man who, in the heat of sexual lust

defrauds his brother.

Greedy men force themselves on young women.

It is possible to translate the word translated greedy as rapacious,

so Paul may have had rape in mind here.

Let’s see what else happened to Norma Jean after the rape!
