Summary: We need to examine our own life and see how much baggage we have, to see what hinders us from fulfilling the great commission! Because sometimes the stuff we acquire in this life can become very distracting!!

Matthew 10:9-15-Provide neither gold nor silver nor copper in your money belts,

10 nor bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor staffs; for a worker is worthy of his food. 11 Now whatever city or town you enter, inquire who in it is worthy, and stay there till you go out.

12 And when you go into a household, greet it.

13 If the household is worthy, let your peace come upon it. But if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.

14 And whoever will not receive you nor hear your words, when you depart from that house or city, shake off the dust from your feet.

15 Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!

Verses 9-10-He is telling the disciples not to take anything that would burden them down, that God would take care of their personal needs!

We need to examine our own life and see how much baggage we have, to see what hinders us from fulfilling the great commission!

Because sometimes the stuff we acquire in this life can become very distracting!!

This is also a reminder, that because of the mission we are called to do, we must always be ready to give up something, to sacrifice something!

Verse 11- Now whatever city or town you enter, inquire who in it is worthy, and stay there till you go out.

Luke 10:7-And remain in the same house, eating and drinking such things as they give, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to house.

Jesus wanted His disciples to be careful where they lodged, making sure they didn’t stay at a home that was scandalous or immoral, even if they had better accommodations, and once they found lodging to stay put till it was time to live that city.

If someone can’t abide at place, or a job, or a relationship, for very long, they begin to get a bad reputation!

Verse 12-And when you go into a household, greet it.

What does this greeting represent, what does it mean?

Luke 10:5-But whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this house.'

John 14:27-Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Philippians 4:7-and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Verse 13- If the household is worthy, let your peace come upon it. But if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.

The best of inquiry (Thinking a person is one way then realizing they are not as they seem), they were able to give a blessing of peace, and revoke that blessing.

If the house be worthy - That is, if the "family" be worthy, or be willing to receive you as my disciples.

But if it be not worthy ... - If the family be unwilling to receive you; if they show themselves unfriendly to you and your message.

Verse 14- And whoever will not receive you nor hear your words, when you depart from that house or city, shake off the dust from your feet.

The Jews, when they came home from any heathen country they stopped at the borders, and shook or wiped off the dust of it from their feet, that the holy land might not be polluted with it.

This symbolical action, shook themselves from all connection with all responsibility for the guilt of rejecting them and their message.

Taylor Swift-Shake It Off

'Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play

And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate

Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake

I shake it off, I shake it off

Heartbreakers gonna break, break, break, break, break

And the fakers gonna fake, fake, fake, fake, fake

Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake

I shake it off, I shake it off

Verse 15-Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!

Quite frankly those city that rejected the gospel message, would find themselves being judged by God, just as Sodom and Gomorrah!

Their sins may be different, at least at first glance, but the punishment is still the same!

Can of makes you wonder how many cities, how many states, how many nations, will fall into this category, of rejecting the gospel?
