SIN DIRECTLY DEFINED IN SCRIPTURE

1. Proverbs 24:9 - The Thought of Foolishness is Sin

The thought of foolishness is sin: and the scorner is an abomination to men.

2. 1 John 3:4 - The Transgression of the Law is Sin

Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

3. 1 John 5:17 - Unrighteousness is Sin

All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.

4. Romans 14:23 - Unbelief is Sin

And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

5. James 4:17 - Not Doing Good is Sin

Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

6. Proverbs 21:4 - Doing Good may be Sin (a sinner can do nothing but sin!) An high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin.

FOUR TYPES OF SIN

1. TRANSGRESSION: A Step - The Line In The Sand

OT. TRANSGRESSION - PEH-shah - “to be rebellious”

Psalm 36:1 - To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David the servant of the LORD. The transgression of the wicked saith

within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes.

NT. ham-AR-tay-mah (4x) - “to commit an act of disobedience”

1 Corinthians 6:18 - Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.

NT. par-ab-AH-ee-no (16x) - “to step over a boundary”

2 John 9 - Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

2. TRESPASS: A Slip - The Banana Peel

OT. TRESPASS - aw-SHAM - “to be guilty”

Leviticus 5:17-19 - And if a soul sin, and commit any of these things which are forbidden to be done by the

commandments of the LORD; though he wist it not, yet is he guilty, and shall bear his iniquity.

And he shall bring a ram without blemish out of the flock, with thy estimation, for a trespass of fering, unto the priest: and the priest shall make an atonement for him concerning his ignorance wherein he erred and wist it not, and it shall be forgiven him.

It is a trespass offering: he hath certainly trespassed against the LORD.

NT. par-AP-to-mah (23x) - “to unintentionally slip or lapse”

Matthew 6:15 - But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

NT. ag-NO-ay-mah (1x) - “to ignorantly make an error”

Hebrews 9:7 - But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:

3. INIQUITY: A Separation - The Crowbar

OT. INIQUITY - aw-VONE - “to be perverse”

Isaiah 59:2 - But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
