Some Things...Money Can’t Buy

Revelation 2:8-11

8 “And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write,

‘These things says the First and the Last, who was dead, and came to life:

9 “I know your works, tribulation, and poverty (but you are rich); and I know the blasphemy of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.

10 Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

11 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death.”’

Allow me some time this morning to delve into the subject...

Some Things...Money Can’t Buy

Our message this morning is part two of a seven-part series...

Delving into the seven messages...

For the seven church’s found in the book of Revelation...

The last time we met we discussed the message...

That Jesus had for the church at Ephesus...

You heard the message had for them in our reading this morning...

He told them that they had some good things...

Going for them...And He appreciated all the love...

But He also cautioned them to watch themselves...

Watch themselves because...He noticed that they...

Didn’t love Him...Like they use to...

And He encouraged them to return to their first love...

The message was just as much true for us...

As it was for that church...

Now we turn our attention to the second message...

To the second church...The church at Smyr-na...

Also referred to as...

The persecuted church...

The Apostle John is now an old man...

Exiled on the Isle of Patmos...

He receives and writes this second message...

To the church at Smyr-na...

Smyr-na was one of the finest trade centers of the ancient world...

The city was both wealthy...And beautiful...

Like Ephesus...Trade routes passed through Smyrna...

They were noted for their paganism...

They boasted of their splendor...

Smyrna was wealthy enough...

To have constructed...An immense temple...

To idolize the emperor Tiberius...

Smyrna was where merchants from every direction converged...

Anything made anywhere...In the Roman Empire...

You could buy at Smyrna...

They had great wealth...And plenty of money...

But I’m here to tell you...This morning...

Believe it...Or not...

SOME THINGS...MONEY CAN’T BUY...

Any whim you might have...

Could be satisfied in the trading stalls of Smyrna...

Silks from the far east...Spices from the islands...

Gold from northern Africa...

Exotic animals from Egypt...

Slaves from Ethiopia...Timber from central Europe...

It all came together in Smyrna...

Folk were rich...

Smyrna’s people thought that money...

Could buy them anything...They wanted...

But...The politics of the Empire were hostile...

It is reported that some five million Christians...

Met their death in Smyrna...

Nevertheless...These Christians had resources...

Folk were rich...

This church didn’t have to have fish dinners...

No chicken dinners...Bake sales...Candy drives...
