For we do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, of our trouble which came to us in Asia: that we were burdened beyond measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life. - 2 Corinthians 1:8
There have been times of great suffering that has come to the Church through persecution in various regions and areas. In the world today there are over 50 countries where quite strong opposition to the Gospel exists in various forms. Trouble will come as Christians in this earth, we are not exempt from misunderstandings, and people saying all manner of evil things of us simply because we confess to know the way of eternal happiness and salvation. The world is full of gods, millions of ways explaining who God is and how to be made right to please him. When we come with the Good News that the Son of God came to clear the confusion away and share plainly to all peoples the way of hope and eternal life, this has come with opposition and hurt. Many are offended by the truth because it declares them to be wrong.
When light shines in the darkness things are exposed. Our Lord said that men loved darkness and many idol worshipping peoples serve their idols so they can continue in their sins but also have their consciences appeased that the gods are happy with them. The true God will not have it this way, God cares not about sacrifice only but that the hearts of men need to be clean to approach him. The Apostle Paul writes in this passage that they received great opposition in Asia in sharing the Gospel. It is the same today as we are obedient to the call of God to share his Good News we will be persecuted. To prepare our minds for this it is suggested to read Matthew 10 and the entire book of 2 Corinthians to start to build a theology and understanding of suffering as a worker in the Gospel. Christians are the light of the world we need to share this light with all men. Though Paul even said they despaired of life at times God still gave them the endurance to be light, and hope to the hopeless.
