Summary: In His last message to the masses Jesus gave us some things to pay attention too. This message was used as a New Year’s Message on the last day of 2006.
Take Heed
A New Years Message
Introduction
These are some of the last words that Jesus
would speak to the masses.
After this most of His words were spoken to
the directly to the disciples. (Mostly
recorded in John 13-16)
The context is about his coming again.
He gives us these warnings.
I. Take heed. Vs. 34
A. From the Greek word “pros-ekh’-o” meaning
to “beware” or “pay attention to”
B. Jesus is saying “Listen, pay attention”.
C. Pay attention to yourselves.
1. Watch yourself.
2. It is a big caution sign.
D. Pay attention to these three things.
1. That your heart be overcharged
with “surfeiting” vs. 34
a. here is a word we are not very familiar
with.
b. it means to be sick from overindulgence.
c. While applied to a hangover, it’s
implication of much further reaching.
d. It is a warning to pay attention lest you
make yourself sick from your lifestyle.
1) putting unhealthy substances in our
bodies.
2) putting too much in our bodies
(overeating)
3) being overindulgent in anything.
e. These are all very selfish.
d. The right way.
1Co 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or
drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the
glory of God
2. Hearts be overcharged with drunkenness.
The Scripture is very clear – Don’t get drunk.
Eph 5:18 And be not drunk with wine,wherein is
excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
Pr 20:1 Wine is a mocker,strong drink is
raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is
not wise.
3. Hearts be overcharged with the cares of this
life.
A. Trust the Lord for everything.
Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all
thine heart; and lean not unto thine own
understanding. (6) In all thy ways
acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy
paths.
B. Pray about everything
1 Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon
him; for he careth for you.
C. Seek the Lord first.
4. Don’t be so preoccupied with these things
that you forget about the Lord’s coming.
A. He will come as a thief in the night.
1Th 5:2 For yourselves know perfectly that
the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in
the night.
B. In the twinkling of an eye.
1 Coring.15: 51 Behold, I shew you a
mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we
shall all be changed. (52a) In a moment,
in the twinkling of an eye, at the last
trump:
C. At a time when you “think not”
Lu 12:40 Be ye therefore ready also: for
the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye
think not.
II. Watch!
A. For His coming (context of verse)
Mark 13:33 Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye
know not when the time is.
B. Yourself –
1. Verse 34
2. For temptations.
Mt 26:41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into
temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the
flesh is weak.
C. Watch out for the work of Satan.
1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your
adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh
about, seeking whom he may devour:
1. He is a destroyer
2. He is a deceiver
3. He is a distracter
4. He is defeated.
III. Pray always! Vs. 36
A. Learn to pray
1. Every day
Luke 18:1 And he spake a parable unto them to
this end, that men ought always to pray, and
not to faint;
2. All the time.
1Thes. 5:17 Pray without ceasing.
3. About everything
Philippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in
every thing by prayer and supplication with
thanksgiving let your requests be made known
unto God
B. We must become people of Prayer
C. We have the promise that God will hear and
answer.
Jer. 33:3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee,
and shew thee great and mighty things, which
thou knowest not.
Conclusion
Take heed – Pay attention.
