John 3:14-21 ¡V Take your Life-saving Medicine ¡V its Free

Moral Dilemma in Moral Development class at College

„X Here¡¦s the scenario ¡V Your wife has terminal cancer when out of the blue, someone comes up with a miracle drug to cure cancer

„X Trouble is, the researcher who developed the drug wants a million dollars for the treatment and there¡¦s no way you can afford to pay for it

„X The dilemma is, ¡§Would it be acceptable to sneak into the lab and steal the drug in order for your wife to be cured?¡¨

„X Not sure what the answer is to that dilemma, but one thing I do know for sure is that all human beings have a terminal disease yet the cure for this disease is free

„X we¡¦re going to John 3:14-21 as we continue our lead up to the crucifixion of Jesus

„X But before we go there, we need to go over to

Numbers 21:4-9 4 Then the people of Israel set out from Mount Hor, taking the road to the Red Sea to go around the land of Edom. But the people grew impatient along the way, 5 and they began to murmur against God and Moses. ¡§Why have you brought us out of Egypt to die here in the wilderness?¡¨ they complained. ¡§There is nothing to eat here and nothing to drink. And we hate this wretched manna!¡¨

„X One of many instances of the ¡§Back to Egypt¡¨ committee moaning and groaning against God and Moses

„X What happens when people focus on what they don¡¦t have as opposed to what they do have

„X Never want to get stuck in the past ¡V the Church of God always moves forward even if it is painful

6 So the Lord sent poisonous snakes among them, and many of them were bitten and died.

„X Bit drastic isn¡¦t it ¡V snakes

„X Sometimes leaders have to take drastic action to prevent rebellion and revolt in the ranks

„X In this case, Israel was in danger of breaking apart and God needed to teach them an important lesson in trust

„X Imagine this for a moment

„X We¡¦ve all seen movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark where Harrison Ford has to step his way through a mass of slithering snakes

„X This is much worse as loved ones are literally being bitten and dying

„X Mothers would have been hysterical, children crying, people writhing in pain

Notice the progression of deliverance

„X First there is ¡§repentance¡¨ which included prayer

7 Then the people came to Moses and cried out, ¡§We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you. Pray that the Lord will take away the snakes.¡¨ So Moses prayed for the people. 8 Then the Lord told him, ¡§Make a replica of a poisonous snake and attach it to the top of a pole. Those who are bitten will live if they simply look at it!¡¨

„X Serpent in scripture represents sin ¡V so by Moses praying for them and their looking they were acknowledging their sin

„X But that¡¦s all they had to do ¡V deliverance came simply from looking

„X In other words it was ¡§free¡¨

9 So Moses made a snake out of bronze and attached it to the top of a pole. Whenever those who were bitten looked at the bronze snake, they recovered!

„X How¡¦s that for a drug? What if all the people in the world who had cancer would recover if all they had to do was look at a bronze snake

„X But can you imagine the impact this news would have had on the people. Word would have spread like wildfire

„X Sure some of the men would have been skeptical. But mothers with dying children would have scooped up their children and ran to the nearest vantage point to see the bronze serpent

„X But as word spread about this incredible news, there would have been a stampede to get the dying to the pole

With that background, let¡¦s now go to John 3 ¡V latter part of Jesus¡¦ conversation with Nicodemus

14Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.

„X Here we see John making the comparison between the serpent experience in the Wilderness and now Jesus being lifted up

„X Now the cure or prescription is slightly different but the result is the same

„X Instead of just ¡§looking¡¨, now we have to ¡§believe¡¨ in other words, It¡¦s the gaze of faith that saves us

„X Important part of repentance is the acknowledgement that we are the ones responsible for Jesus being on the cross

„X We look to the one who became ¡§sin¡¨ for us - 2 Cor 5:21
