Summary: We don’t always see things is black and white but God has set a standard before us that we cannot dismiss.

I John 1:8-10 - 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Roman 3:23 - 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

II Chronicles 7:14 -14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

Humor - A girl knelt in the confessional and said, "Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned."

"What is it, child?"

"Father, I have committed the sin of vanity. Twice a day I gaze at myself in the mirror and tell myself how beautiful I am."

The priest turned, took a good look at the girl, and said, "My dear, I have good news. That isn’t a sin - it’s only a mistake."

Thought - The Christian is one who is so uncomfortable with his sin, despising it in himself so much, that he fights, and eventually wins-out against the dominance of sin in his life.

When Thomas Dewey lost the ’48 election to Harry Truman, after everyone expected a Dewey landslide, Dewey later said he "...felt like the man who woke up to find himself inside a coffin with a lily in his hand and thought: ’If I’m alive, what am I doing here? And if I’m dead, why do I have to go to the bathroom?’" Genuine believers are embarrassed by sin in their lives. They feel like they don’t belong. A pig will go back to the mud-wallow because he feels at home there. A sheep gets out of a mud-hole quickly, and avoids the next one he sees. That’s the nature of a sheep.

I. What is Sin?

A girl knelt in the confessional and said, "Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned."

What is sin?

1. Willful disobedience of God’s word

2. This word essentially means "missing the mark; falling short; or a departure". The essential idea being conveyed by the use of this word is that of "a departure from holiness"; thus "hamartia" means to sin; to depart from God’s standard of holiness; to become unrighteous; to fail to live up to what God requires of us.

3. We cannot compare ourselves to anyone but God.

Major vs Minor sins

1. God does not see any difference in sin

2. All sin is equal, no little white lies

II. Who’s Guilty?

We are all guilty

* Roman 3:23 - 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

How are we guilty?

* Fall of Adam and Eve in the garden

* Born into sin

III. What do we do about it?

The Christian is one who is so uncomfortable with his sin, despising it in himself so much, that he fights, and eventually wins-out against the dominance of sin in his life.

1. Salvation & Sanctification

* II Chronicles 7:14 -14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

* John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

2. God’s love is so deep for us, that there isn’t anything we can do to lose it. (Big mistake that people think)
