Summary: These Israelite parents were to teach their children obedience morning and night, so these words would not become a matter of formal legalism, but a response based upon understanding. Remember obedience is formed when its a way of life.

next week!"

My parents taught me LOGIC:

"Because I said so, that’s why."

My parents taught me FORESIGHT:

"Make sure you wear clean underwear, in case you’re in an accident."

My parents taught me IRONY:

"Just keep laughing and I’ll give you something to cry about."

My parents taught me about the science of OSMOSIS:

"Shut your mouth and eat your supper!"

My parents taught me about STAMINA:

"You’ll sit there ’til all that spinach is finished."

My parents taught me about WEATHER:

"It looks as if a tornado swept through your room."

My parents taught me about HYPOCRISY:

“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.

These Israelite parents were to teach their children obedience morning and night, so these words would not become a matter of formal legalism, but a response based upon understanding. Remember obedience is formed when its a way of life.

A great preacher once said, “When times are troubled we cry, “God, give us men to match our mountains.” In reply, God gives us children and say’s, “Here’e the building material.”

So what were the scripture that were taught to the children?

Deuteronomy 6:1-5NLT “These are the commands, decrees, and regulations that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you. You must obey them in the land you are about to enter and occupy, 2 and you and your children and grandchildren must fear the Lord your God as long as you live. If you obey all his decrees and commands, you will enjoy a long life. 3 Listen closely, Israel, and be careful to obey. Then all will go well with you, and you will have many children in the land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you.

4 “Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. 5 And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.

Here’s the Blue Print~ Are You Ready?

1. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.

Parents, if you don’t practice scriptural principles, your children won’t either.

Joshua 1:8NLT Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.

2. Impress them on your children.

1 John 3:18NLT Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

You must spend time, emphasize, stress, prompt, make clear, drum in and imprint.

3. Talk about them. Kids won’t catch the truth by osmosis.

Look for teachable moments all during the day.

Teach your children to stand up for what is right.

Listen to Proverbs1:10-15NLT My child, if sinners entice you, turn your back on them! 11 They may say, “Come and join us. Let’s hide and kill someone! Just for fun, let’s ambush the innocent 12 Let’s swallow them alive, like the grave; let’s swallow them whole, like those who go down to the pit of death. 13 Think of the great things we’ll get! We’ll fill our houses with all the stuff we take. 14 Come, throw in your lot with us; we’ll all share the loot.” 15 My child, don’t go along with them! Stay far away from their paths.

If our kids are going to stand for God against destructive influences they need instruction in:

The qualities of true friendship.

The inevitable law of consequences~ Reap what you sow.

The right kind of hero’s.

Teach your children to respond the right way to God’s direction and correction. Help them to understand that God’s correction is not rejection.

Proverbs 3:11-12NLT My child, don’t reject the Lord’s discipline, and don’t be upset when he corrects you. 12 For the Lord corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights.

4. Teach them to respond correctly to your discipline.

Don’t permit today what you punished yesterday, saying things like, “How many times have I told you?” or, “If you do that again you’re grounded.” (This is a big sign you’re not serious).
