Just Announced: Philippians Sermon Series

Summary: Here's a sermon suggesting ways to get involved in talking to others about Jesus no matter what limitations a person might have.

COLOSSIANS 4:2-6 Used 08-18-02

2 Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving; 3meanwhile praying also for us, that God would open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in chains,

4that I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.

5Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time.

6Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

The Book of Colossians comes from a letter...

written by the Apostle Paul while he was in prison in Rome.

He wrote to a group of Christians in Colosse.

Paul had never been to Colosse.

This church was started by Epaphras.

Epaphras became a Christian while visiting in Ephesus.

He went back home and led others to Christ...

and the Colossian Church was formed.

Things went well for a while...

and then false teachings sprang up in the church.

Epaphras went to see Paul in Rome about these problems.

So Paul sent this letter to the Colossian Christians.

Our text this morning comes from the closing of that letter.

The Holy Spirit has given Paul the words...

to deal with the false teachings.

And now the Colossian Christians are reminded of their calling.

I'd like to tell you the story...

About an old lady that everybody called "Grandma Jones."

She had a close relationship with Jesus.

And she knew that Jesus wanted her to be a soul-winner.

She wanted to lead others to Christ.

However, Grandma Jones was pretty much home bound.

She didn't drive.

She had no family to take her places.

But she had a desire to tell others about the love of Jesus.

Every day, Grandma Jones sat in her rocking chair...

Looking out the living room window...

At all the people walking by her house.

She knew that many of them did not know Jesus Christ,

And they would face an eternity in hell.

Grandma Jones had what it took to be a missionary.

But what does it take?

Let me share the A.B.C.'s of Missions.

Verse 5 Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time.

We need: Awareness of the opportunity:

You have neighbors: perhaps right next door.

That may be your opportunity.

You have family members: a son or daughter,

a brother, a sister,

a mother, a father,

an aunt or uncle,

a nephew or niece or cousin.

That may be Your opportunity.

You have a friends: you work with them,

go to school with them,

play with them,

That may be your opportunity!

Next, We need: Awareness of the need:

A survey taken in Edwards & Wabash Counties

Shows over 14,000 people do not go to church.

Over 14,000 area people NEED Jesus Christ.

Are you aware of the need?

People without Christ die and go to eternity in hell!

They need the gospel...NOW!.

They need a savior....NOW!

They need Jesus Christ....NOW!

John 3:18 "he who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."

2 Thessalonians 1:9 "and these will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,"

Next, we need: Awareness of our responsibility:

Matthew 28:19-20 "go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

Romans 1:14 "I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish."

John 4:35 "do you not say, 'There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest?' Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes, and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest."

Grandma Jones looked out her window on the fields.

She prayed that somehow

she'd be able to win somebody to Christ.

But she didn't know exactly how to do that.

She had no way to get out much.

Very few people came to visit her.

But she made up her mind

that if the Lord would open a door,

she'd have the courage to walk through it.

Verse 3:meanwhile praying also for us, that God would open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in chains,

Gospel Chapel needs more people
