The Beginning of God’s Judgment

Revelation 6:1-8

1 Now I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals; and I heard one of the four living creatures saying with a voice like thunder, "Come and see."

2And I looked, and behold, a white horse. He who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer.

3When He opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, "Come and see."

4Another horse, fiery red, went out. And it was granted to the one who sat on it to take peace from the earth, and that people should kill one another; and there was given to him a great sword.

5When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, "Come and see." So I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand.

6And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, "A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not harm the oil and the wine."

7When He opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, "Come and see."

8So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the earth.

We resume our examination of the Book of Revelation.

In chapter 5 we read about Jesus receiving a scroll.

That scroll had 7 seals.

Now in chapter 6 Jesus is going to begin opening those seals.

These 7 seals contain details of judgment on Israel

as well as all the people left on the earth after the Rapture.

This judgment is directed to all who have rejected Jesus.

This will tell us what happens during the 7-year Tribulation period.

The purpose of the Tribulation period

is to punish unbelievers for their sin and rejection of Jesus

and to bring the more people to faith in Jesus.

It’s interesting that we will see these judgments

are very similar to the event Jesus describes

in Matthew chapter 24 verses 4 through 31.

So open your Bibles now to Revelation Chapter 6.

Verse 1: Now I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals; and I heard one of the four living creatures saying with a voice like thunder, "Come and see."

As we have already determined,

the Lamb here is Jesus, the only one worthy to open the seals.

The voices of 1 of the 4 living creatures sounds like thunder.

That indicates it was loud and got John’s attention.

The Living Creature says "Come and see".

John is invited to look into heaven

and see things never seen on the earth until now.

The opening of this first seal

begins what is called "The 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse".

The 4 horsemen present the picture of man's cruelty to man.

They represent a prediction of the actions of man

that will cause much human suffering.

This is not really anything new.

In the history of this world people have come to power

causing their fellow human beings much suffering.

They came with false hopes of peace

followed by wars, famines, and death.
