Summary: Jesus is coming back some day for His bride. We must be ready for that day. This sermon is based on the story of the 10 virgins and includes a funny story.

The Bridegroom Is Coming

Matthew 25:1-13

1 "Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.

2 Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish.

3 Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them,

4 but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.

5 But while the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept.

6 And at midnight a cry was heard: 'Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!'

7 Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps.

8 And the foolish said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.'

9 But the wise answered, saying, 'No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.'

10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut.

11 Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, 'Lord, Lord, open to us!'

12 But he answered and said, 'Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.'

13 Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.

Today’s passage is one of the parables of Jesus.

The Bible says Jesus is coming back some day.

He is coming again for His bride, the church.

He will come at the time of the Rapture.

You won’t find that word in your Bible.

but the Bible tells about it in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

The Bible says that could happen at any moment.

The question is: If Jesus came back today

would you be ready?

Before I delve into today’s passage, I have a story.

A young man who lived in Illinois was going to get married.

The wedding was to be held about 70 miles away

in the hometown of his bride-to-be in Indiana.

Unfortunately, this young man had never been in that town.

So on the day of the wedding,

he got dressed up in a tuxedo he had rented.

Just as he was ready to walk out the door,

the young man remembered that the wedding is in Indiana.

Most of Indiana is in the Eastern Time Zone

while Illinois is in the Central Time Zone.

Therefore, Indiana is 1 hour ahead of Illinois time.

The young man looks at his watch

and sees that it’s 11:00 a.m.

So it’s already 12 Noon in Indiana.

The wedding is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.

and he has less than an hour to drive 70 miles

to get to the church.

So he jumps in his car and speeds off to Indiana.

More of that story a little later!

Point #1. The Virgins Represent People Today.

1 "Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.

Notice that the virgins have their own lamps.

These maidens were all morally and physically pure.

They lived a good life and resisted temptations of the flesh.

There was nothing in their lives that could bring criticism

or accusations against them.

Each virgin has a lamp.

There is a great truth to be learned here.

We should all live a pure life before the Lord,

but as we will see,

there must be more than just being a good person.

We must know Jesus in a personal way.

There must be a time when you were born again.

Living a good life cannot bring salvation!

Each of these virgins went out to meet the bridegroom.

In that day the virgins would meet the wedding party

with lamps lit to light the way for them.

They all expected to be included in the wedding festivities.

Do you see a resemblance to many people today?

Many people today claim to be Christians.

Many believe they are going to heaven when they die.

Everyone expects to meet the Lord and be accepted by Him.

They live a good life; attend church; and been baptized.

Let’s get back to my story for today

Well, the groom to be gets to the town

where the wedding is to be held,

but he’s still running short on time.

So as he is speeding down Main Street in this town,
