Summary: There are far too many inactive people in the churches today. Here’s a sermon that challenges us to be ready and to go to bat for Jesus. The message contains a baseball story to drive home the point.

The Church Needs More Ready People

John 21:15 – 21

15 So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He said to him, "Feed My lambs."

16He said to him again a second time, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He said to him, "Tend My sheep."

17He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?" Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, "Do you love Me?" And he said to Him, "Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You." Jesus said to him, "Feed My sheep.

18Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish." 19This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, "Follow Me."

20 Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, "Lord, who is the one who betrays You?"

21Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, "But Lord, what about this man?"

I want to begin today by telling you about Leo Durocher

and one of the players he managed.

Leo Durocher is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. He played in the Major Leagues from 1928 to 1945. Durocher was a slick fielding shortstop who played with a lot of fire and determination. He helped the Yankees win the World Series in 1928. Durocher played 3 seasons with the Cincinnati Reds before he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1933. He was the captain of the famous Gas House Gang and helped the Cardinals win the 1934 World Series. In 1945, Leo was traded to the Brooklynn Dodgers. Durocher was selected to the National League All Star team 3 times.

We’ll get back to that story later!

But let’s return to our Bible passage for today!

After His resurrection, Jesus appeared to His disciples.

He was getting ready to ascend into heaven.

He has this last meeting with His disciples after breakfast.

This passage of Scripture was before Jesus

gave the great commission to all His followers.

Look again at Verse 15:“Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?”

Peter answers, “Yes Lord, You know that I love you”

Jesus replies, “Feed my lambs”.

Three times Jesus asked Peter, “Do you love Me?”

And 3 times Jesus tells Peter to 1] “Feed My lambs”

2] “Tend My sheep”

3] and “Feed My sheep”.

What was the purpose of all this?

Well, look at verses 18-19

18Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish." 19This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, "Follow Me."

It was God’s willed for Peter to be the first church builder!
