The End Is Near

Message Point: Jesus is coming back; you better be ready.

Focus Passage: Luke 21:25-28

Introduction: When I was a kid, school let out at 3:15. At about 2:45, I started watching the clock. It took an eternity for it to reach 3:00. 3:00-3:10 was pure torture and 3:10-3:15 was absolute murder. All I wanted was for school to be over so I could get home and watch reruns of Gilligan’s Island. Last night, I watched OU play West Virginia. While my beloved Sooners won, it wasn’t pretty. I was so tired I could hardly keep my eyes opened. My daughter, Emily, kept saying, “Daddy, go to bed. I’ll tell you what the score is in the morning.” With 5 minutes left in play, I very nearly did it, but I had to keep watching. The last 30 seconds of the game took nearly 15 minutes of TV time. Even then, there was a penalty at the end of the game and WV got to try one more time to make a touchdown. All I wanted was for the game to be over so I could go to bed. Today, we watch the news with excitement, anticipation, and a little dread. All we want is for Jesus to return so we can go to Heaven. Well, the end is, indeed, near.
