Ice Breaker: What do you think are things that damage unity?

Key Verse: I Corinthians 3:1-9

INTRODUCTION:

Have you noticed that ducks fly in the form of a V? While in the air, these birds unite to create a symmetrical formation—one that seems to be choreographed by the divine hand of God. Upon flying in this manner, the ducks are not only presenting an air spectacle, but they are working together in unity, emigrating toward their destiny.

There are many valuable lessons that we can learn from ducks with regards to unity. Each one of them recognizes its purpose and understands its place in the group. Without unity, the “V” would turn into a “O” and the ducks would pass their time only going in circles.

1. Unity is Pleasant: “See how good and pleasant it is…” (Psalms 133:1)

2. Unity is Powerful: “It is like the good oil that descends the head…” (Psalms 133:2)

3. Unity is Refreshing: “It is like the dew of Mt. Hermon… The Lord gives blessings and eternal life” (Psalms 133:3)

THREE BRICKS IN THE UNITY OF THE BODY:

1. Focus on Jesus, not the Church

a) After all, the grace of Jesus is what joins with the church. Colossians 1:17-18 As a body cannot function without the head, the church cannot function without Christ. Each time that Jesus stops being the focus, the church slowly begins losing its identity and purpose.

b) If we focus on Jesus and the gospel, and not in creeds neither churches, we will be well founded to grow in unity. 1 Corinthians 1:10-15. Paul asks the church to direct its devotion toward Jesus Christ, and towards any leader, shepherd or individual.

2. Focus on Harmony, not on Conformity.

a) In reference to the primitive church, Acts 2:44 says: "All the ones that had believed were together, and they had in common all the things". This type of unity is characterized by the union and the similarity.

b) A lot of effort is needed so that a group of people with different backgrounds, cultures and ideas can have harmony, but more than all, humility of spirit is needed, social classes should not exist in the family of God.

3. Focus on Action, not on Words

a) If the concept of the unity does not go accompanied by real actions, all that will remain in the end will be alone an empty slogan. It is very easy to say religious phrases here and there to awake the emotions. But to take true steps, is defiant.

b) The apostle Paul revealed some concrete ways to promote the unity: (Roman 12:9-16).

CONCLUSION:

To close, we shouldn’t forget the ducks and the great angle they form as a “V” when they fly. Each bird recognizes that they need one another to overcome. The same thing happens in the body of Christ.

QUESTIONS:

Why do you think there is not much unity in our times?

What do you think is the greatest enemy of unity?

What other practices can we do to encourage unity in the church?
