Brothers and Sisters in the Lord Jesus Christ,

When I got my first computer I thought that it was the best thing ever. It was a second hand computer. It used the old DOS processor, it had an old word processing program and it used a dot matrix printer. That was in 1992. Today I have a computer which is at least 1000 times faster, with the ability to run multiple programs, and edit video and create documents that are just as good as those done by professionals. I was really thankful for the first computer I ever had, but now that I have something that is far superior, I would never want to go back to it.

In Hebrews the author is addressing a group of people who had been told of the superiority of the ministry of Jesus. In fact these are a group of people who had been willing to stand by Jesus and be counted for Him. To get an idea of the kinds of things they were willing to do all we need to do is turn to Hebrews 10:32-34:-

“Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you stood your ground in a great contest in the face of suffering. Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated. You sympathized with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions”.

This was a group people who, at some point, were standing firm for Jesus, but who were now finding it difficult to do so. Their faith was taking a real hammering. There were questions and doubts about the ability of God to help. And they wanted to wind back the clock.

The reason they wanted to wind back the clock was because Hebrews is written to a very specific group of people. The word “Hebrew” is another term for the word “Jew”. Which means that this is a letter which is written to Christians who started out as Jews. They had moved out of the old ways and put away the many rituals. They were relying on the cleansing grace of Jesus, not the sacrifices at the temple. They could see that Jesus was the promised Messiah of the Old Testament. They had come to that point … and even defended the need for such a lifestyle. But now they wanted to go back to what they were before. They were going to abandon their freedom in Christ and go back to rituals and laws. Indeed they were going to abandon Jesus and go back to their priests and holy men. They were going to get rid of the superior and go back to that which was inferior.

That is the situation being addressed by the writer of the Hebrews. And the writer of the Hebrews addresses that situation in our text by showing that Jesus is the One who brings a superior revelation. “In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways”. When the new BA Ford Falcon was being launched in Australia the advertisements always only gave us a small glimpse of the whole car. Sometimes we got to see the bonnet and headlight. Sometimes we see the car way off in the distance. Sometimes it was a picture of the side skirt. Eventually, after many weeks, we got to see the whole car. The unveiling process was complete.
