Roads to the Resurrection - Series

The Jerusalem Road - April 4, 2004 AM

Luke 9:51-56

These events are recorded by Luke alone. The thrust of the passage is that Jesus’face is set—it is fixed toward Jerusalem.

Luke divides this journey of Jesus into three stages. Each stage begins by strongly emphasizing Jesus’ journey toward Jerusalem (Luke 9:51, 53; Luke 13:22; Luke 17:11).

(9:51-56) Introduction: Jesus turned and set His face toward Jerusalem and death. This was one of the turning points of His life.

As He launched forth in this new direction, the first subject covered is His mission.

The mission of the Son of Man is seen in clear terms—terms so clear that the follower of the Lord cannot miss the meaning.

Every one walks the Jerusalem Rd.

It was a road of Determination, Discernment and Destiny

And for everyone who walks the road there will be different responses and experiences.

As we will see some people react to Jesus differently than others.

1. Walking the Jerusalem road takes Determination

Stead fast means to turn resolutely in a certain direction,

51 When the days were approaching for His ascension, He was determined to go to Jerusalem; NASB

51 As the time drew near for his return to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. NLT

Determination produces

1. Leaders

2. Loyalty

Mark 10:32- And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus went before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him,

The Jerusalem Rd. Leads to the Cross

2. Discernment

Choices that we make, while on the Road

Everyday choices-

Not good and bad,,,,,, but Good and better-------

Luke 13:22 And he went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem.

Discernment Time to leave the other cities to journey to Jerusalem

Three things we need discernment for.

1. For which Road to Follow

2. Inform us which voice to listen too

How many of you hear voices?

3. Introduces you to fellow travelers

You have a choice who you travel with.

And some of you have made bad choices who you have chosen to travel with.

And if you keep walking with them they will cause

1. Delays

2. Distractions

3. Detours

Discernment will keep you from being sidetracked

Satan just wants to get you a little sidetracked

To Not take short Cuts

Every wants to achieve but few want to pay the price

Not willing to pay the price for the second mile

No short cuts to maturity

Luke 9:52 And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.

Luke 9:53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.

Luke 9:54 And when his disciples James and John saw [this], they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?

There will be two responses to the Samaritans

Compassion and Forgiveness Vs. 55

Or rejection and wrath

Isn’t it funny we often want to treat people exactly like they do us?

History of the relationship

Some times we want to do the right thing but for the wrong reason

They wanted to call fire down from Heaven.

I thank God he didn’t kill me every time I rejected Him,

I thank God James and John were not God,

Some times people will try killing you if you reject them.

What a religious Response,

God Slaughter them instead of

God Save them.

Jesus response

Luke 9:55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.

Luke 9:56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save [them]. And they went to another village.

3. Destiny

He set his face to go toward Jerusalem

His destiny

Why are you here?

Why were you created

I’m here to raise a Godly family,

Sometimes I’m good at it sometimes I’m miserable

Jesus went to Jerusalem to Die.

Your destiny will do three things

1. Will encourage others - Your testimony - for you to bless others - give more than your money give your self

2. you will encounter obstacles - vs. 54

Some people will not understand you, You will have problems, Have set backs

Luke 14:1 says the Pharisees were watching Jesus Closely

3. Help you to enjoy overcoming

Hebrews 12:2 for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
