Summary: Jesus completed His mission

Luke 23:44-46

44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. 45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. 46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

After going through the journey of His mission, after being hit, after sitting at the table with people who would betray Him, after carrying the cross and falling down many times carrying it, after hanging on the cross between two sinners and After bleeding. Jesus is now at the end of the mission, which seemed impossible and looked impossible and felt impossible.

Have you ever my brothers and sisters been at a ruff time in your life, a hard time in your life where it looked like tomorrow would never come and the sun would never shine again?

Jesus was now at that point!

A point that seemed impossible to man, but possible with God. A point that seemed as if it would never end was now at its completion.

Here in the text we find Jesus at the end of His natural journey here on earth, the assignment and mission He has been sent to complete was now at an end.

Although many times we find Jesus at a place of wanted to give up – Such as in the Garden “Father if it be thy will, allow this cup to pass from me. Or on the cross, when He cried with a loud voice, Eli Eli Lama Sabachthani being interpreted my God, My God why have thou forsaken me?

He still continued to hold fast to the promise of His father in three days He should rise again. Although this mission seemed impossible every now and again He still maintained and Jesus lasted until the end!

Just as Jesus had his cross to bear, we too will and have bared our own crosses. So I stop here in my text to ask you:

Knowing the outcome of your situation can you survive the test of time?

Can you finish the mission that has been assigned to your life despite the backbiting and lying?

Can you endure the pain and affliction until the bitter end?

Before Jesus said Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit. He fixed the people who crucified him by saying father forgive them for they know not what they do. He then goes on to embraces the robber and tells him today thou shall be with me in paradise. He turns and looks down and established the connection between Mary His mother and John his disciple women behold thy mother, mother behold thy son. He than reassures himself by posing this question and speaks by saying my God my God why has thou forsaken me? After feeling forsaken and coming half way through his mission Jesus realizes that he has to keep going. But He is getting a little tiered and thirsty after loosing blood and water from his body from the 6-9th hour.

After giving Him vinegar and Hyssop to drink, Jesus came to the point where He knew that His work had been completed and He said it is finished, He was at His bitter end. Because Jesus knew He did not send himself to complete this mission but someone greater than Him. He was now returning back to the place of His beginning. Where He states Father into thy hands I commend my spirit.

The word commends means to Entrust, the word Entrust means to trust in.

Jesus was saying father after all of this I’ve been through I now trusts you.

After being beat until my mother did not know who I was father I trust you,

After being blamed falsely, talked about, scandalized and betrayed father I trust you.

After I was feeling isolated and forsaken by you, the one who loved the world so much that you sent me to redeem man back into reconciliation with you. Father I trust you.

In spite of all of the pain Jesus had to endure He still had faith and trust in the one whom sent Him on the mission.

This is what God is saying to us. He knows we have our crosses but do we still trust Him.

He knows it hurts and we feel alone and like everyone has turned away from us but do we still trust Him?
