Summary: Why the gospel is an offense to the religious , and the gospel is the greatest hope for sinners like me.

The offense of the gospel

Romans 9:33

33 As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

What is this offense that it speaks of

And what shall I be Ashamed of

This is a great mystery that we should learn of today

Romans 5:16-21

16 And not as[ it was] by one that sinned,[ so is] the gift: for the judgment[ was] by one to condemnation, but the free gift[ is] of many offences unto justification. 17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) 18 Therefore as by the offence of one[ judgment came] upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one[ the free gift came] upon all men unto justification of life. 19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. 2,

Moreover the law entered, that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: 21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

Here is the test of offense

It is called the good test

Give the test ( give four of the tend commandments lie , steal , adultery of the heart, murder of the heart)

Have you , like me ever lied? Stolen?, looked with lust? , hatred in heart is murder? )

See the bible proclaims that most men will proclaim his own goodness

And Gods law is a offense to a guilty criminal

The offense of the gospel is that it is good news!

The gospel is meant to be an offense to religious people... not to sinners! The gospel really is good news for sinners. "God demonstrates His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners."

Romans 3:19-28

Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

If the thought of personal righteousness has been destroyed

Great ! Now will you turn away from this amazing grace because of pride and self righteousness or embrace him who loves you so much , he became a man lived a sinless life as a ransom and died for your trespasses and sins , to set you free from the day of judgment. By just calling on him to save you, by his name Jesus is the only name under heaven by which we can be saved

Ephesians 2:8-19

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

11 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; 12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: 13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
